ESPN and Disney will start hyping their coverage of the 2027 Super Bowl more than a year in an advance with a 24-hour event dubbed The Handoff.
Starting on Feb. 8, the day when NBCUniversal will air Super Bowl LX from Santa Clara, CA, ESPN will establish an on-air presence in Southern California. Coverage will start at SoFi Stadium, site of Super Bowl LXI on February 14, 2027, as well as neighboring Hollywood Park before shifting to Disneyland in Anaheim.
Next year’s Super Bowl will be ESPN’s first. ABC last aired the game in 2006. The last time the Super Bowl was played at SoFi, in 2022, Disney leaned into the synergy opportunities, having shows air from Disneyland, but this year’s scheme will be dramatically more intense.
Airing across streaming and linear platforms, The Handoff will feature “live shows, exclusive reveals and original storytelling from locations throughout Southern California,” ESPN said in an announcement.
After this year’s Super Bowl, which pits the Seattle Seahawks against the New England Patriots, ESPN’s NFL PrimeTime will air live from Levi’s Stadium. Longtime ESPN host Chris Berman will hand off coverage to Scott Van Pelt, who will be at SoFi. Super Bowl Live, hosted by Laura Rutledge, will follow, also from SoFi.
On the following day, First Take, SportsCenter and NFL Live will air from Disneyland Park.
ABC’s Good Morning America will originate in part from Levi’s Stadium for its Monday show and on Tuesday will air an interview with a player from the Super Bowl LX championship team. World News Tonight with David Muir will also feature content in its Monday broadcast.
ESPN described The Handoff as “a prelude to ESPN and Disney’s full Super Bowl initiative,” promising to release more details soon.
