Emma Stone's R-rated movie is invading.

Stone has become a dominant force in Hollywood and is an Academy Award-winning actress known for her versatility as a performer. Her career evolved from comedic roles in movies such as Superbad and Easy A. Stone won Best Actress twice for her roles in La La Land (2016) and Poor Things (2023). The actress used a PowerPoint presentation at 15 years old to convince her parents to let her pursue acting in Los Angeles, and now she is taking the world by storm.

Stone's recent R-rated sci-fi movie has dominated Netflix's top 10 streaming chart, and Bugonia is now resting at number four. This marks the fourth movie collaborating with filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos following The Favorite, Kinds of Kindness, and the Oscar-winning movie Poor Things. The pair have become a creative powerhouse, with the actress stating that Lanthimos provides a "safe environment" during production.

Bugonia, directed by Lanthimos and starring Stone, Jesse Plemons, Aidan Delbis, and Alicia Silverstone, was loved by those who dove into the wild world and achieved an impressive 87% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics stated that the sci-fi was dripping with "sardonic humor," it's an "honest, provocative, and visionary piece," as well as being "terrifically well acted." ScreenRant's Jack Walters stated that the movie "Bugonia really capitalizes on the director’s ability to blend riveting, socially charged storytelling with an equally impressive sense of humor."

The movie was adapted from Jang Joon-hwan's 2003 cult-classic South Korean film Save the Green Planet! The premise is that a passionate beekeeper (played by Plemons) is convinced a pharmaceutical CEO (played by Stone) is an alien sent to destroy Earth. Stone's performance was widely celebrated, and her commitment to the role also led her to shave her head and ultimately landed her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.

The Oscar nominations for Stone in 2026 also broke records as the 37-year-old became the second-youngest person and the youngest woman in history to earn seven nominations. Walt Disney was younger when he reached that goal in 1936 at 34 years old. Meryl Streep previously held the record for women in 1988 at the age of 38.

The actress is also working on producing projects during this stage of her career, but she has a new romantic comedy in the works. Rom-coms are no strangers to Stone from her previous roles in Crazy, Stupid, Love, La La Land, and Easy A, but now she will be starring alongside Chris Pine in a new movie titled The Catch. The Universal Pictures movie will be released in theaters on May 21, 2027, which will be her first feature film after Bugonia.

Stone's Bugonia is available to stream on Netflix.
