Elden Ring: Nightreign is a monster mash of Elden Ring and Dark Souls enemies, director confirms

The announcement of Elden Ring: Nightreign during The Game Awards 2024 surprised many, but what kept the community chatting was not merely its existence. Elden Ring: Nightreign crosses dimensions with other FromSoftware properties, bringing together enemies from the base game and Dark Souls.

Like the Leonardo DiCaprio pointing meme, FromSoftware fans called out moments in the Elden Ring: Nightreign trailer that seemed to include enemies that didn’t belong to the base game. It was like the ghosts of Dark Souls‘ past were suddenly invading the Lands Between. At one point, footage showed player characters fighting with what fans swore was the Nameless King from Dark Souls 3. But that’s just silly, right?

Not at all, according to Game Director Junya Ishizaki. As reported by Eurogamer, Ishizaki confirmed in a Famitsu interview that Nightreign will indeed pit players against Elden Ring and Dark Souls enemies alike. According to Ishizaki, the Nightking’s power is capable of summoning the other-worldly creatures. Oh, he first got permission from Hidetaka Miyazaki and the Dark Souls 2 Director Yui Tanimura (of course).

Elden Ring: Nightreign is bringing the band back together with Dark Souls

The Nameless King isn’t the only former baddy coming to the party. As Eurogamer mentioned, IGN pointed out at least two other potential Dark Souls alums. Both the Centipede Demon from Dark Souls and The Duke’s Dear Freja from the sequel could be confirmed. You can get a possible glance of the former in the Nightreign trailer at 1:21. Clearly it’s no longer interested in defending Lost Izalith.

The news certainly piques my interest. I was somewhat mum on the online co-op spin-off at first. But if it lets me team up with some buds to beat the Fume Knight’s ass like a drum, I’m all for it.
