Most-played games range from Clair Obscur to Civ to Elden Ring to Halo 2 and beyond.

Fans of Elden Ring recently got a sneak peek behind the scenes of the upcoming movie from Alex Garland and A24 Films, and it's already blowing expectations out of the water and getting players hyped for what could be a "generational" video game adaptation for the big screen.

While the fan-recorded set footage that leaked online last weekend was enough to get most fans pumped, there's still a lot of doubt about how Elden Ring could possibly be adapted to film in a satisfying way. This is largely due to FromSoftware's ambiguous approach to storytelling, vague and sparse dialogue throughout the game, and reliance on "atmospheric" details to develop the world's lore and mood.

But perhaps the biggest subject dividing fans of Elden Ring right now about the movie is its main character, and there's one NPC in particular who many fans are placing their runes on as a favorite, albeit controversial choice (via Reddit).

Elden Ring's Main Character Is A Divisive Choice

The choice of main character in the Elden Ring film has been a contentious topic since the project was announced, and many fans hope it will be an already-existing NPC from the game. A fan-favorite choice for the role is none other than Vyke, Knight of the Roundtable Hold, also referred to as Festering Fingerprint Vyke or Vyke the Dragonspear (aka the guy on the cover, seen above).

Fans argue that Vyke would be an ideal choice for the main character because he was a Tarnished who rose to great heights before a tragic downfall, and was the closest to becoming Elden Lord before the player begins their journey. Unlike many NPCs throughout Elden Ring, Vyke also has a relatively clear and succinct story arc that many fans argue would be perfect for a screen adaptation.

While Vyke's story might be one of the top choices, the final decision on whom the film focuses on is bound to be a controversial choice, especially if it ends up being a story about the Tarnished. The player character's arc in the game is far too sprawling to fit into a single film without cutting or jumping over significant plot points.

As SpaceGhost4004 on Reddit says, "The last thing I wanna see is a movie that follows the events of the main game," though they admit there's still hope for Vyke as a protagonist based on the leaked set footage.

The Elden Ring Film Starts Shooting Soon

At this point, it's all up for speculation until Alex Garland or A24 decide to provide further details on the film's plot and characters, and until now they've been relatively tight-lipped in terms of official details. However, according to reports from World of Reel, the Elden Ring movie officially kicks off filming next week, which explains why set photos have started leaking on social media outlets.

With production on the movie in its early stages, it wouldn't be too surprising if additional information starts to surface with details about the Elden Ring film's protagonist in the coming months.
