The main characters of Earth Abides experience a phase of joy and hope in episode 5 before things take a grim turn and the illness seemingly returns. Based on George R. Stewart's book of the same name, Earth Abides sets out to draw a realistic picture of how the world would change if an outbreak wiped out almost the entire human population. It primarily revolves around a small community of survivors who face day-to-day challenges as their group grows and the forces of nature reclaim the planet by restoring natural order.

Earth Abides episode 4 ended on a bittersweet note, where the human community managed to dig out a well with the help of their new guests. However, Ish felt uncomfortable around the new survivors because their leader, Charlie, threatened his place as the leader and even seemed suspicious. When Charlie's motives finally become evident to other characters in Earth Abides' episode 5, Ish is forced to make a dire decision, which gradually ripples into chaos.

8 Ish's Intuition About Charlie Turns Out To Be Accurate

Charlie Shows His True Colors Soon After Digging The Well

Ish openly expressed his concerns about Charlie's motives in Earth Abides episode 4. However, Emma brushed off his suspicions by claiming that he is always distrustful towards new guests. Charlie even manages to become one of the most likable people in the survivors' group after he digs out a well and solves the main characters' water shortage problem. Unfortunately, Ish's intuition about him turns out to be accurate when Charlie sexually assaults Evie.

7 Ish Takes It Upon Himself To Punish Charlie

Ish Realizes They Cannot Let Charlie Get Away With His Actions

When Ish and his people learn about what happened to Evie, they do not react impulsively. Instead, they discuss what they can do to ensure the situation does not escalate. They realize that Charlie has arrived to take over their entire community and will not back down until he has achieved that motive. Therefore, they collectively decide to get him out of the way.
