Taylor Sheridan's Dutton Ranch spinoff flips Yellowstone's original concept on its head. Premiering with two episodes on Friday, May 15, on Paramount+, Dutton Ranch reunites Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) as the married Yellowstone survivors make a new life for themselves in South Texas.
Yellowstone's series finale saw Beth and Rip leave the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch after Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) sold his family's land to the Broken Rock reservation. The Dutton-Wheelers bought a modest ranch for themselves "forty miles west of Dillon," but Dutton Ranch establishes that Beth and Rip's new digs are in Rio Paloma in South Texas.
Beth laments that she "just wants peace" in Dutton Ranch's full trailer, but danger and violence have an uncanny way of finding everyone whose surname is Dutton. Dutton Ranch's impressive cast includes new allies and formidable adversaries for Rip and Beth in a compelling reversal of Yellowstone's core premise.
How Dutton Ranch Flips Yellowstone’s Premise
Beth and Rip's new nemesis in Dutton Ranch, Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening), is the Yellowstone saga's new version of John Dutton III (Kevin Costner). As Beulah tells Beth in Dutton Ranch's trailer, her Rio Paloma ranch is 190 years old — over 50 years older than the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch was before Kayce sold it.
Taylor Sheridan’s New 9-Part Western Is More Like Landman Than Yellowstone
Dutton Ranch is being billed as Yellowstone season 6, but Beth and Rip's sequel/spinoff will also lean into aspects of Taylor Sheridan's Landman.
Like John Dutton in Yellowstone, Beulah Jackson is the latest in her family line to control a massive ranch and the land it entails. Beulah's lifelong mission is to keep her ranch safe from rivals and developers, and then pass it down to the next generation. In Dutton Ranch, Beth and Rip are the outsiders and invaders.
Dutton Ranch will eventually clarify Rio Paloma's geography, but Beth and Rip buying the old Edwards Ranch and rechristening it the "Dutton Ranch" is a threat to Beulah Jackson and her property. Whether it's the Dutton Ranch's proximity to Beulah's land, or whether it's because of the Dutton family's reputation, Beth and Rip's mere presence is an issue and makes them Jackson's enemies.
It's a clever twist by executive producer Taylor Sheridan and showrunner Chad Feehan (who was fired for clashing with the actors) to place Beth and Rip in the position of the many foes that battled in Yellowstone. Even if Beth and Rip don't have designs on taking Beulah Jackson's ranch (at least, maybe not at the beginning), now the Dutton-Wheelers know what it's like to be the unwanted.
Why Being Duttons Are What Will Save Beth & Rip
In Yellowstone, John Dutton, with the help of Beth, Kayce, and Rip, repelled multiple enemies and corporate entities that tried to take the Yellowstone from the Duttons. Ultimately, no one could, and it was John's death, along with the impossible financial costs of maintaining the ranch, that led Beth and Kayce to end the Duttons' reign over Montana.
To Beulah Jackson, who must be aware of the Duttons' history with the Yellowstone, Beth and her cowboy husband are the progeny who gave up their family's legacy. And now, Beth Dutton comes to South Texas and tries to claim a stake in another family's land. It's understandable why the Jackson family would take issue with Beth and Rip creating the "Dutton Ranch" in Rio Paloma.
In South Texas, Beth and Rip are largely on their own.
In South Texas, Beth and Rip are largely on their own, with only their adopted teenager, Carter (Finn Little). Beth has untold funds and the know-how to earn millions, while Rip knows everything about ranching, fighting, and being a cowboy, but they lack the advantages the Dutton family once enjoyed in Montana, including political influence and power over law enforcement.
Beth and Rip learned from her father, John Dutton, what it takes to defend their ranch. Dutton Ranch puts Beth and Rip on the other side of the fence and forces them to fight for their right to belong in a land that isn't theirs. Beth and Rip now know what it was like to be the many enemies they beat in Yellowstone, but they're not going to be beaten themselves.
