Dutton Ranch continues the Yellowstone saga, but Taylor Sheridan's new neo-Western will more closely resemble Landman in a couple of major ways. Executive produced by Sheridan, Dutton Ranch was created by Chad Feehan and picks up the story of Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) in their new Texas home.

At the end of Yellowstone, Beth and Rip leave the bad memories of Montana behind and move to a ranch in South Texas, forty miles west of Dillon. Dutton Ranch gives Beth and Rip, as well as their adopted son, Carter (Finn Little), 27 acres to call their own. Hundreds of miles away from the Yellowstone, Beth began to allow herself to be happy, although Dutton Ranch is poised to upend her peace.

Dutton Ranch Is Set In Texas Like Landman, Not Montana Like Yellowstone

Beth Dutton on a Texas road

It's easy to forget that Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler are no longer in Montana in Dutton Ranch. Paramount+'s marketing touts Dutton Ranch as "Yellowstone season 6," and this creates an expectation that Beth and Rip still live in Big Sky Country. While the Dutton-Wheelers could visit their old stomping grounds, Dutton Ranch is a Lone Star State-set series, like Landman.

Yellowstone Needs Taylor Sheridan's Most Heroic Dutton To Come Back

Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone franchise is undergoing a resurgence with new spinoffs, but it won't be complete until one Dutton hero returns.

Landman, the big oil drama created by Taylor Sheridan and Christian Wallace, is now one of Paramount+'s biggest global hits. Starring Billy Bob Thornton, Andy Garcia, Demi Moore, Ali Larter, and Sam Elliott, Landman's action encompasses Fort Worth and Midland, Texas, as well as the oil-rich territory called the Patch. Landman bleeds pure, black Texas gold.

In Dutton Ranch, Beth and Rip are fish out of water, regardless of how long it's been since Yellowstone ended. Rip has some experience working in Texas, and has allies in the powerful 6666 Ranch, but the Dutton-Wheelers are without the main advantage they had in Yellowstone: the Dutton family's fearsome reputation.

The Dutton name doesn't have sway in Texas as it does in Montana, the majestic wilderness state that the Duttons helped found, bled, and died for. In Montana, the Duttons had political power and their own branch of law enforcement, the Livestock Commission, which was founded by their family. All of that means little or nothing in South Texas.

Billy Bob Thronton's Tommy Norris knows all of the ins and outs of the oil business in Landman, but Beth and Rip will be learning as they go in Dutton Ranch. Beth and Rip will need all of her smarts, all of his muscle, and their combined ruthlessness against their new nemesis, ranch owner Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening).

Dutton Ranch’s Natalie Alyn Lind Creates Teen Romance Like Landman’s Michelle Randolph

Olena and Carter

An undeniable part of Landman's appeal to its global audience are its bombshell female characters, mainly Tommy's ex-wife, Angela (Ali Larter), and their teenage daughter, Ainsley Norris (Michelle Randolph). Much of Landman season 1 was devoted to Ainsley's frankly sexual relationship with her football player boyfriend that drove Tommy up a wall.

Michelle Randolph was magnificently cast by Taylor Sheridan, who also gave her a second character, Elizabeth Strafford, in Yellowstone's prequel 1923. Randolph's Yellowstone character is, in fact, part of Beth Dutton's family tree since Elizabeth was married to Beth's great, great uncle, Jack Dutton (Darren Mann), a century ago.

Natalie Alyn Lynd joined Dutton Ranch's cast as Oreana, Carter's love interest. This allows Dutton Ranch to have its own spin on Landman's sexy teen romance centering on Ainsley. Oreana and Carter are also Dutton Ranch's modern-day echo of how Rip and Beth's attraction started when they were teenagers at the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch.

Dutton Ranch offers the best of Yellowstone and Landman's worlds.

Dutton Ranch seems to meld successful and popular aspects of both Yellowstone and Landman. However, the fact that Texas is Beth and Rip's new stomping grounds makes it a world away from Montana. The Lone Star State offers new rules, new dangers, and new enemies for Beth and Rip. Dutton Ranch offers the best of Yellowstone and Landman's worlds.
