Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake explores some of the best aspects of the classic game and drastically improves them, including Friendly Monsters you can recruit. With the remake, Square Enix introduced the concept of Friendly Monsters throughout the game alongside the Monster Arenas. Throughout the world, you can explore different locations to get a chance to encounter one of the friendly monsters.

Some of these friendly monsters can be incredibly hard to see, giving players who love a bit of a challenge a chance to find all 121 monsters scattered around the map. Several towns have NPCs that will provide players with hints for finding specific monsters during certain times of the day. While there are differences in the quality and usefulness of monsters that can be recruited at the beginning and the end of the game, this list oversees the best friendly monsters that can be found and how to get each one.

10 Healslime

Heal Party Members

As one of the most valuable monsters to recruit in the early game, the Healslimes are an incredible addition to any party. With the ability to heal your party members, when paired with the Bubble Slime, this duo becomes an unstoppable team with offensive and defensive properties.

As one of the " starter " monsters, a Healslime is available to be a proficient healer for any team that is prioritizing monster hunting and pure damage.

These cute jellyfish-like creatures are available in early game and later areas. There are three Healslimes hidden around the map. The first one, Healie, is in Khoryv and hangs around the inn during dusk. The other two Healslimes, Fixer, and Healiza, are found in secret spots in the southwest desert and at a secret set of rocks southeast of Lancel in the ocean during dusk, respectively.

9 Restless Armor

A Tank Monster

A single Restless Armor monster in Dragon Quest 3

Found within the Ibis area during Chapter 4, the Restless Armor is an interesting monster reminiscent of a Darknut for those familiar with the ghostly armor set. Restless Armor is a tank with high attack and health points but is also very capable. Restless Armor is also easily recruited before players must take on the E Rank Monster Arena Challenge, making it even more useful.

Three types of Keys are items you need to get in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake to progress the story and unlock new, important areas around the world.

There are four Restless Armor locations, with each of them being named after a Knight of the Round Table. While they are not the most difficult to find, they tend to be able during the night, and for Galahad, who is hidden north of Persistence, you do need an Everbird to reach him. This is a higher-tier monster to obtain, especially for players just starting their monster collection journeys.

8 Wyrtle

The Dark Prince

Wyrtle named Monty from Dragon Quest 3 Remake

Definitely not similar to a certain water-based turtle or giant fish dragon, the Wyrtle is an unsettling cross between a dragon and a turtle. The names of each monster change depending on which order you catch them, but it makes no difference if players find Zippy or Turgon the Wyrtle first. This might discourage you from venturing out to get a creature like this too early, but if you have the means to defeat it, then perhaps it is worth a try.

This is a later game find for many players, as it can only be found in a secret area in the east ocean or on the northwest island of Lozamii. A caveat to finding the Wyrtle in the secret spot in the east ocean is that the ship is required for its recruitment.

7 Green Dragon

Ra's Mirror Required

The Green Dragon from Dragon Quest 3 Remake

The Green Dragon is one of the later/post-game monsters that players should try to recruit for further challenges after defeating the main story. Introduced in the original Dragon Quest, these scaled legendary beasts are a challenge in themselves to find and then defeat.

6 Catula

An All-Rounder

A Catula from Dragon Quest 3 Remake

This vampiric cat creature is a hidden gem for players who want an interesting monster to recruit for their team. Although there are no clear stat differences or other benefits to using a Catula, they are one of the best all-rounded monsters to recruit earlier in the game. They are not the best for late-gameplay but are great for some more challenging mid-game battles.

The biggest appeal of using a Catula is their high spell damage, especially early in the game.

There are two locations where players can find a friendly Catula all over. Alutac is the first one seen on the Western staircase on the second floor of the Tower of Transcendence. Luna, the other, can be found in the Northeast of Jipang during dusk, like many other creatures.

5 Cumaulus

Found In Snowy Areas

This cloudy creature is an ideal member for some of the Monster Arena rank teams in DQ3. Cumaulus is quite literally a floating cloud that can spawn in different areas around the map as long as there is some snow. This is a must-have due to their high haste and incredible fire-breathing attack.

As long as a healer is on your team, it is incredibly easy to keep Cumaulus alive.

The best part of a Cumaulus is that one can be found relatively early in the game. Three friendly Cumaulus monsters exist: Cloud, Rainy, and Fluffy. Cloud is the first to be encountered in the snow northeast of Khoryv. Rainy can be found during the day behind a horse statue on the second floor of Edina Castle, and Fluffy can be spotted in a secret area southeast of Olivia's Promontory.

4 Elysium Bird

Everbird Needed

An Elysium Bird from Dragon Quest 3 Remake

The Elysium Bird is a friendly monster that is somewhat elusive. Only able to be found in secret spots, the Elysium Bird is an excellent achievement for players working with a Monster Wrangler vocation in Dragon Quest 3 Remake. These giant purple birds are a force to be reckoned with and are vital in fulfilling Monty's quest to recruit 100 monsters and later in the fight against the Grand Dragon.

There are many abilities and spells players can make use of in Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, but they must first be unlocked by leveling Vocations.

While not much is known about these elusive birds, two friendly Elysium Bird monsters can be found. Beaker, the first of them, can be found in a secret area to the west of Aliahan Island, and an Everbird item is required to recruit it. Cronus, the other of them, can be found between the Northeast and Southeast continents in Alefgard.

Found In Zoma's Citadel

The Liquid Metal Slime is an easily overlooked friendly monster due to its hidden nature. While there are two different friendly monsters in most available types, the legendary nature of the Liquid Metal Slime puts it in a category of its own. Quicksilver, the only Liquid Metal Slime in Dragon Quest 3 Remake, is a rare, friendly monster to come across and is a bit of a respite compared to most players' standard Liquid Metal Slime experience.

Especially when using a Monster Wrangler, the ease with which this monster can be recruited is a bit of an apology by Square Enix for how hard other metal slimes can be to farm. Quicksilver can be found on the third level of the basement in Zoma's Citadel. Hidden in the upper left corner of the room under the arrow tile paths, Quicksilver can be engaged and recruited.

2 Soaring Scourger

Also in Zoma's Citadel

A Soaring Scourger from Dragon Quest 3 Remake

The Soaring Scourger is a pallid demon equipped with a saber and a whip; it is the perfect monster companion if you're brave enough to find it. Like Quicksilver, there is only one recruitable Soaring Scourager. This demon was previously exclusive to the original DQ3 but has since been introduced to many more recent titles. Still classified as somewhat legendary, the Soaring Scourger is found in the same area as the Green Dragon, giving players a clue to its difficulty.

Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake: 10 Best Armors & What They Do

Armor isn’t just for defense in the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake - many defensive pieces have special effects that provide major advantages in battle.

The only friendly monster of its type, Sky, can be found at the lower left dead-end of the main path of the lower basement levels of Zoma's Citadel. It is barely visible and hidden by some of the partitions in the room, so players should keep a sharp eye out for this demon if they wish to add it to their collection.

1 Infernal Serpent

Found At Night

An Infernal Serpent from Dragon Quest 3 Remake

To finish off the list of some of the best friendly monsters available to be recruited, the Infernal Serpent, Soaron, is an absolute game-changer. Unlike some other creatures on the list, this can be caught in the mid to late game without too much difficulty but can be used for so much more. If players have not been focusing on rising through the ranks of the Monster Arena, adding Soaron to a team can help easily demolish the competition.

This nigh-on legendary serpent can be found in a secret spot on the path to Zoma's Citadel. Soaron, an apt pun on the all-seeing, is looming above players on their way to find the secret ending boss, Xenlon. The purple dragon is found in the central area on the path to Zoma's Citadel, so watch for the lonely dragon in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake.
