Gossip Girl: 5 Worst Things Chuck Did To Blair (& 5 Worst Blair Did To Him)

16 hours ago 7

When Gossip Girl was on the air, fans loved Chuck and Blair's chemistry, but there is no denying that Chuck and Blair were also awful to one another. Gossip Girl followed the lives of wealthy teens on the Upper East Side as their every move was stalked by an anonymous blogger. Chuck (Ed Westwick) and Blair (Leighton Meester) were two of the wealthiest of those teens with the highest social status in their circle. They were also one of the main on-again-off-again couple of the series.

Their love story was epic and messy and sometimes downright awful. They often brought out the worst in one another, but they kept coming back to each other in the end, which is part of what made them so fascinating to the audience. Chuck and Blair had their cute moments, but it wasn't enough to salvage the fact that they were in a toxic relationship. It's one thing to be part of an enemies-to-lovers trope; it's quite another to be enemies and lovers at the same time.

The Worst Things Chuck Did To Blair In Gossip Girl

Chuck Traded Blair For A Hotel

Blair and Chuck meet on a bridge in Gossip Girl

This is one of the worst things Chuck could do to another person, let alone the love of his life. Chuck's Uncle Jack makes a deal with him, that if he is willing to give up Blair to him, Chuck can own the hotel he has been after. Chuck agrees with the deal and sells Blair to his uncle in order to have ownership of the hotel. He treated his girlfriend like a literal object rather than a human being with feelings and emotions.

The exchange between Jack and Chuck is par for the course within their family. The audience is able to see that many of Chuck's most toxic traits are the rest of his father and uncle's influence on his life. Blair also realizes that as well, but the knowledge that he was willing to literally sell another human being for a piece of property is something she never seems to truly forgive, despite being willing to forgive Chuck of just about anything.

The best episodes of Gossip Girl include scandalous scenes, intense relationships, and great character reveals.

Chuck Was Verbally Abusive

He even said that it gave him immense pleasure to see her suffer...

Chuck seems to get a rise out of making Blair feel terrible. He would tell her countless times that he didn't love her, he would make her feel worthless by telling her she had lost all her value and beauty, and he would insult her regularly for either giving too much or too little. Chuck seemingly enjoyed toying with her emotions and seeing how far he could push her with just his words.

He even said that it gave him immense pleasure to see her suffer, adding that he wouldn't stop until she had "nothing", which makes him not only a terrible boyfriend but a terrible person. Blair already had issues of insecurity as a result of her relationship with her mother and her friendship with Serena, and Chuck just made everything worse for her.

It is actually very surprising that the series did not use her relationship with Chuck to highlight the body image issues she has in the first season since his words targeted her so specifically.

Chuck Slept With Blair's Enemy To Get Revenge On Her

Chuck toys with Jenny's dress in a stairwell in Gossip Girl

Budding fashion maven Jenny Humphrey and Blair Waldorf have never seen eye to eye. In fact, it's fair to say that they have almost always had it out for each other. They tried to be friendly, but Jenny learned from Blair's Queen B ways very quickly and set out to usurp her position of power.

When Chuck got the impression that Blair no longer loved him, he ended up crawling into bed with Jenny - the same person he attempted to sexually assault as a freshman. This was after already knowing that Jenny and Blair had been competing for the Queen B title. Chuck was just using Jenny as an act of revenge against Blair. When Blair found out about their encounter, Chuck made his girlfriend feel as though it was her fault for his affair with little J, and Blair still mostly blamed Jenny instead of Chuck.

Chuck Got Violent Around Blair

Blair examines a cut on her face in Gossip Girl

When Blair was in a relationship with the prince she thought would end up being the man of her dreams, Chuck became extremely jealous and possessive of her. He ended up grabbing her after she told him that she did not want him anymore, and he threw her down to the ground while claiming that she belonged to him. He got on top of her and then when she cried for him to stop, he violently punched the glass wall that was behind her. This behavior is simply inexcusable.

What makes this behavior even worse, though violence in a relationship is never an acceptable form of communication, Blair even attempts to get back together with Chuck while still with Prince Louis. She offers that she will leave the prince and come back to him when she starts to think the fairy tale might not be real, and Chuck denies her, saying that she should be with Louis instead.

He spends so much time scaring her and obsessing over her, but then dismisses her completely.

Chuck Publically Humiliated Blair On Gossip Girl

Chuck and Blair on Gossip Girl

One of the ways that Chuck needed to grow throughout the series was in learning better ways to handle rejection because he tends to hurt others as a form of revenge whenever he does not get what he wants. Seeking revenge instead of accepting a "no" is something Chuck does over and over throughout the series, not just in the case of Blair.

When Blair chooses Nate over him though, he decides to turn to Gossip Girl where he spills all of Blair's secrets about her sex life to the world wide web. He tells everyone her personal business, and this destroys Blair's reputation. Not only did he give that information, but he also participated in the public shaming of her when he knows how important Blair's reputation is to her. If anyone else attempted to tear down her perfectly constructed facade the way he did, he would likely be livid.

Of the main characters in Gossip Girl, it is eventually revealed that the only character to never send in a tip to Gossip Girl about the friend group is Nate.

Chuck Marries Blair To Prevent Her Testifying Against Him

...it is hard to imagine that Chuck’s manipulations and illegal activity would have stopped simply because he married Blair.

The final episode of Gossip Girl is full of a whirlwind of story conclusions. In addition to the reveal that Dan has been Gossip Girl all along, Chuck and Blair decide to get married while Chuck is trying to avoid getting arrested. The idea is that as his wife, Blair cannot be forced to testify against her husband, which will allow him to escape his crimes and keep Blair out of them.

The scheme is presented as Chuck and Blair finally being willing to commit to one another and spend the rest of their lives together, but it is so rushed and haphazard that the more cynical in the audience might disagree. It is one last time that Chuck can manipulate Blair into getting what he wants from her in the series. If she had said she wanted to wait to marry him, his life could have gone a very different route.

A flash forward shows the two of them together with a child, but it is hard to imagine that Chuck’s manipulations and illegal activity would have stopped simply because he married Blair.

10 Harsh Realities Of Rewatching Gossip Girl, 17 Years After Its Premiere

The teen drama Gossip Girl premiered 17 years ago, and changes in culture mean that fans of the show have some harsh realities to face.

The Worst Things Blair Did To Chuck In Gossip Girl

Blair Used Boys To Make Chuck Jealous

Blair and Louis are dancing on Gossip Girl.

Blair has a knack for using other men in order to make Chuck jealous. Chuck even said it best when he claimed that Blair would treat men as "props" in order to get a reaction out of him. There were several times when she would date a guy just to hurt Chuck's feelings, and she rarely considered how this would end up destroying the emotions of others.

Often, she would grab either Nate or Prince Louis to make out with whenever Chuck would enter the room in order to make him upset. It was pretty childish of Blair, but he had hurt her so badly that she sometimes just acted out of revenge, and it would end up clouding her judgment.

It is not dissimilar to Chuck deciding to hook up with whichever warm body was closest whenever he was angry at Blair either. The two frequently picked partners right in front of one another to get back at each other, which cannot be a good sign for a healthy relationship.

Blair Made Chuck Feel As Though He Was Not Worthy Of Her

Nate, Blair, and Chuck in the back of a car in Gossip Girl

Blair loudly proclaims how utterly disgusted she is by him to anyone who will listen...

From the very start of the series, Blair is consumed with her image. The audience gets to understand why she is thanks to the season one episode “Blair Waldorf Must Pie,” but for most of the run of the show, she wants to appear perfect to everyone around her. In her eyes, that means having the perfect boyfriend, and at the start of the show, that is Nate.

Even though Nate and Chuck are best friends, Blair consistently turns her nose up to Chuck and insults him for his life choices. She makes disparaging remarks on everything from his choice of women to his attire. While, yes, Chuck gives as good as he gets when Blair insults him, it has to be noted that Blair loudly proclaims how utterly disgusted she is by him to anyone who will listen, including Chuck himself. She even does it after they hook up for the first time.

Blair always implies that she is somehow better than Chuck, that being with him is beneath her. She does the same thing when it comes to Serena being interested in Dan, and even when she and Dan become closer. She has a habit of trying to put others down to make herself feel good, even when those others are people she cares for.

Blair Pushed Chuck Into A Relationship He Wasn't Ready For

Chuck stands behind Blair at a mirror in Gossip Girl

Although it's clear that Blair deserves someone a lot better than Chuck, it is not always fair of her to constantly push him into a committed relationship that he clearly is not ready for. They were only in high school at the time, and Chuck had enough self-awareness to know that he wasn't looking to be monogamous, especially at such a young age. Chuck wanted to have a good time, and initially, hooking up with Blair was a good time for him.

Yet, because Blair wants it so badly, she pressures him into commitment even though he is clearly on the fence in the early seasons of the show. Blair is the kind of person who is always on the hunt for her fairy tale and trying to make sure she has the happy ending she deserves. At times, she does not care who she hurts while trying to achieve it, and that includes Chuck.

Blair Juggles Nate And Chuck At The Same Time

Blair looking over Nate's shoulder while he embraces her in Gossip Girl

For the early part of the series, Chuck and Nate are the best of friends. They had been inseparable since childhood, but that all was put on hold when they found themselves falling for the same girl. After Blair gives into her attraction to Chuck but is still not getting physical with Nate, she finds herself confused about her feelings and begins juggling Nate and Chuck at the same time. Eventually, she starts sleeping with both of them.

Although it's normal for a teenager to feel uncertain about what they want, the fact that Blair knew about the close friendship between Chuck and Nate was a little careless on her part. She knew it would end up destroying their friendship, but she continued to sleep with both of them anyway. It's worse when coupled with her attempting to have the perfect relationship with Nate, only to then pressure Chuck into a relationship as well.

Blair Made Chuck Feel Ashamed For Liking Her

Blair looking over her shoulder at Chuck in the Gossip Girl pilot

When Chuck tells Blair that he is starting to get butterflies in his stomach because of her, she tells him that those butterflies need to be crushed. Whenever they hook up at the beginning of the series, Blair constantly implies that it is one big mistake, and she acts as though Chuck is in the wrong for his feelings. Even though Blair is someone who dreams big and encourages her friends like Serena to explore their feelings, when it comes to Chuck, his feelings do not initially matter to her.

Although she had feelings for him too, she would place Nate on a pedestal and Chuck on the back burner. She would attempt to push Chuck away as much as possible, and at the beginning of the series, she was almost embarrassed to be associated with him at all.

Blair Pressures Chuck Into Saying Those Three Words

Blair and Chuck in formal attire in Gossip Girl

Sometimes it's best to allow partners to move at their own pace. It's normal to want love and affection, but people have to move at their own pace and become comfortable expressing themselves - whether verbally or physically. Blair, however, has a hard time accepting that idea.

Blair goes out of her way to try and get Chuck to say "I love you", even though he clearly is not ready to do such a thing. It would be better if she allowed him to move at his own speed and say it when he felt comfortable to do so, rather than because he was pushed into it — especially since Chuck, like most people, doesn't react well when he feels backed into a corner.

Though fans tend to love when Blair and Chuck make declarations of their feelings, it should be noted that early in their relationship, Blair continues to needle him, first shaming his feelings, and then trying her best to get him to admit them, effectively forcing Chuck into admitting them. In Gossip Girl, there is no shortage of manipulation between Chuck and Blair.
