Donald Trump will sit down for an interview with NBC Nightly News anchor Tom Llamas, with a portion of it set to air as part of the network’s Super Bowl pregame coverage Sunday.
This will be Llamas’ first interview with Trump since becoming anchor last June. The interview will take place at the White House on Wednesday, with a portion airing on Nightly News at 6:30 p.m. that evening, and an extended portion streaming on Top Story with Tom Llamas on NBC News Now at 7 p.m. ET. A transcript of the extended interview will be posted on NBCNews.com on Wednesday, with a complete transcript to come following the pregame show airing.
With the pregame interview, Trump will be continuing a tradition of presidents that extends nearly 20 years, with the host network typically getting a one-on-one with the president. Trump last year did an interview with Bret Baier when Fox News aired the big game.
Joe Biden skipped last year’s sit-down when CBS had the rights. Biden also declined an interview in 2023, when Fox News had rights.
When he was president in his first term, Trump declined to do an interview with NBC News in 2018. Trump was interviewed by then-Fox News host Bill O’Reilly in 2017, CBS News’ Margaret Brennan in 2019 and Fox News’ Sean Hannity in 2020.
The Super Bowl tradition of a news division interview with the president dates to 2009, when Barack Obama appeared with NBC News’ Matt Lauer just weeks into Obama’s presidency.
