EXCLUSIVE: The upcoming Broadway adaptation of Sidney Lumet’s gritty classic Dog Day Afternoon has added three to its cast, with John Ortiz, three-time Tony Award nominee Jessica Hecht and Spencer Garrett joining the previously announced Jon Bernthal and Ebon Moss-Bachrach in the production.

Ortiz will play Detective Ferrara. Ortiz’s TV credits include Apple TV+ Bad Monkey and HBO’s Luck, and he’s appeared in such films as David O. Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook, Ridley Scott’s American Gangster, and Jack Goes Boating directed by Philip Seymour Hoffman, with whom he co-founded NYC’s LAByrinth Theater Company. He recently completed principal photography for the upcoming feature Whalefall alongside Josh Brolin for 20th Century Studios, for an expected release in spring of 2026.

Hecht, whose many Broadway credits include Eureka Day, Summer 1976 and The Price, will play Colleen, a role that correlates somewhat to the film’s Sylvia, played by Penelope Allen. Hecht’s TV credits include an Emmy-nominated turn on Netflix’s Special, and roles on Tokyo Vice, The Boys and Succession. She might be most recognizable to TV audiences as Susan Bunch on Friends and Gretchen Schwartz on Breaking Bad. She will next be seen opposite Kevin Kline in the new series American Classic. Film credits include J. Edgar and Sideways among others.

In his Broadway debut, Garrett will play FBI Agent Sheldon, similar to the character portrayed in the film by James Broderick. Credits include the films Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Thank You for Smoking, with recent TV appearances including Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty, Murdaugh: Death in The Family and Netflix’s The Residence. He’s appeared on stage in Windfall at Bay Street Theatre, By the Way, Meet Vera Stark at L.A.’s Geffen, and Alone Together and In The Moonlight both at the Pasadena Playhouse. Garrett is repped by Luber Roklin Entertainment and Paradigm.

Directed by Olivier Award nominee Rupert Goold (Ink, King Charles III) and written by Pulitzer Prize winner Stephen Adly Guirgis (Between Riverside and Crazy, The Motherf***er with the Hat), Dog Day Afternoon will begin Broadway previews Tuesday, March 10, and officially open Monday, March 30, at the August Wilson Theatre.

As previously announced, Bernthal will play Sonny Amato (portrayed in the film by Al Pacino) and Moss-Bachrach will play Sal DeSilva (John Cazale in the movie).

Lumet’s 1975 film and this Broadway adaptation are based on a real Brooklyn bank robbery and hostage incident from 1972. The film, along with The Godfather, The Godfather Part II and Serpico, cemented Pacino’s place in the Hollywood firmament and featured one of his most often imitated bits of dialogue: the improvised “Attica! Attica!” chant.

The play’s official synopsis: “Step back into the sweltering summer of 1972, New York City — a time when the Vietnam War looms large, Watergate headlines flood the news, and one man’s desperate act captivates the nation. A Brooklyn bank hold up quickly goes wrong, and with each gut-wrenching twist that unfolds, chaos ensues that ignites the city as they follow the actions of a man on the edge.”

Today’s casting announcement was made by producers Warner Bros Theatre Ventures (Executive Vice President & Chief Content Officer Mark Kaufman), Sue Wagner, John Johnson and Patrick Catullo.
