Like Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, and the Cartmel Masterplan, Doctor Who's 2026 Christmas special has become some mythical thing that may or may not have ever existed. The BBC's iconic sci-fi series was already careering toward TV's Bermuda Triangle after season 15 and Ncuti Gatwa's regeneration into Billie Piper, but fans could find a crumb of comfort in the official confirmation that Doctor Who would get a 2026 Christmas special before going away to regroup.

Then came the retraction a few months later: the BBC's announcement that it had taken the decision, alongside Russell T Davies, to scrap the 2026 Christmas episode in light of Doctor Who being put out to competitive tender and RTD stepping down from his showrunner role. The U-turn was confusing enough, but RTD triggered further speculation by revealing in his farewell Instagram post, "There won’t be a Christmas Special - we only cooked that up to guarantee a future when no one knew what would happen," and, "There was no script, I never wrote it."

There may not have been a script in place, but there was evidently a well-fleshed-out concept, because the same Russell T Davies has now confirmed in an interview with The Guardian broadly what the Doctor Who 2026 Christmas special's plot would have been:

"I pitched it to the BBC, and they loved it. An olde-worlde English village intercut with a huge, mysterious spaceship, an outer-space festival called Winternox, and lots and lots of Daleks, with something very unexpected hidden away … Oh, yes, I liked it!"

It might not have been fully scripted, but the enthusiasm shown by the BBC/RTD proves the 2026 special was more than just a half-baked idea thrown together to guarantee Doctor Who a future during uncertain times. There was a genuinely exciting story in the pipeline, and while the details we have are scant, the episode looks like it would have fixed a number of problems with Doctor Who season 15's finale.

Doctor Who's Second Era Didn't Deserve To End On "The Reality War"

Ncuti Gatwa happy in the TARDIS in Doctor Who

Ncuti Gatwa's two seasons in the TARDIS are rarely given the credit they deserve, and despite some missteps, episodes such as "Boom," "73 Yards," "The Well," and "Lux" are right up there with the best of Doctor Who's modern era. Truthfully, the main areas of disappointment were the two season finales, which failed to pay off the long-term angles Russell T Davies was attempting to construct.

As things stand, "The Reality War" represents the final episode of Doctor Who's 2005-2025 era, and perhaps even the final episode of Doctor Who overall if the competitive tender process goes awry. By any measure, that is not a fitting conclusion for such a defining period in TV history.

"The Reality War" fumbled Belinda's storyline by retconning her into parenthood, turned Omega into a CGI henchman, and hurried Ncuti Gatwa into the most awkward regeneration sequence since Colin Baker fell over and turned into Sylvester McCoy. Neither Doctor Who nor RTD deserved to depart on such a sour note.

It is, of course, impossible to judge the quality of an unmade episode based on a few lines of synopsis, but there are a handful of other factors to consider. Not only does Doctor Who's proposed plot for the 2026 Christmas special sound exciting, it sounds very much like a standalone story. The RTD2 era thrived during its self-contained episodes, free from the burdens of long-term storytelling, so there's a more-than-respectable chance that the 2026 special would have been, if not a stone-cold classic, then at least superior to "The Reality War."

Also, Daleks. The canceled festive effort would have become Doctor Who's first Dalek episode since RTD's return to the show. That would excite all by itself, but Doctor Who ending its second era with one last, massive battle between The Doctor and the Daleks also feels appropriately grandiose as a climactic final act.

Doctor Who's 2026 Christmas Special Would Have Cleared Up At Least One Mystery

Billie Piper as the Sixteenth Doctor in Doctor Who.

Another point of contention with Doctor Who season 15's ending has been the sheer amount of unanswered questions and unsolved mysteries left over. The Timeless Child reveal still hadn't been fully resolved when RTD introduced the Boss, the Toymaker's tooth, Susan's messages, Rogue's fate, and Sixteen borrowing Rose Tyler's face.

It's impossible to say which, if any, of those plot points would have been resolved in 2026's Christmas special. One would like to think that, knowing Doctor Who was nearing a period of major transition, Russell T Davies might have at least wrapped up the big ones. Curiously, the Christmas special's synopsis does mention "something very unexpected hidden away," which could relate to Susan (since Carole Ann Ford already confirmed filming scenes for "The Reality War" which were cut from the final edit), or The Boss (which was RTD's big through-line, teased since the 60th anniversary).

Or it could've just been the Second Doctor's recorder and some moldy Jelly Babies. We'll likely never know.

Still, if the BBC had forged ahead with Doctor Who's 2026 Christmas special, at least the Billie Piper issue would have been left in a stronger position. Whichever production company takes on Doctor Who next faces the dilemma of how to explain Piper suddenly emerging from Ncuti Gatwa's regeneration energy. If Doctor Who chooses to completely ignore it, the scene will hang in the air like a bad, unexplained smell. If Doctor Who does attempt an answer, it'll almost certainly need to do so without the presence of Piper herself. It's a no-win scenario.

Had Doctor Who's 2026 Christmas episode happened, we can assume Billie Piper would have played The Doctor, forcing the issue in regard to 1. the resemblance to Rose and 2. whether Piper was playing a true regeneration. This would've made things slightly easier for Doctor Who's incoming writers, who could've then pulled an offscreen regeneration à la McGann-Eccleston. That works a lot better than having Ncuti Gatwa and Doctor Who's next lead actor separated by a single, never-mentioned-again scene of Billie Piper saying "hello."

Even better, RTD could have ended the Christmas special with Piper herself starting to regenerate, setting up a neat blank page for Doctor Who's new stewards. Despite their fearsome reputation, the Daleks have a shockingly poor record against The Doctor, only responsible for triggering the doesn't-really-count metacrisis regeneration during David Tennant's first tenure. Defeating Billie Piper's Sixteenth Doctor would've allowed the Daleks to claw back a slither of credibility after decades of embarrassing defeats.
