Less than a week after Disney+ launched one of its most captivating fantasy dramas, viewers are completely hooked. Created by Tim Federle, the series holds a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 7 critics, who praise the characters' chemistry and the engaging plot twists. Originally planned for Disney Channel, the show switched to Freeform, where it premiered on October 1 before arriving on Disney+ and Hulu the next day. On Freeform, it features 10 episodes lasting between 25 and 43 minutes. On Disney+ and Hulu, however, episodes are split into 21 chapters, each about 10 to 22 minutes long.

Coven Academy is a nostalgic, CW-style teenage witch drama easily worth bingeing. Set in a prestigious magic school in the haunted heart of New Orleans, it follows three teen witches: Briar (Malina Weissman), Sasha (Jordan Leftwich), and Tegan (Ora Duplass), and their warlock peers. At this school, power is currency, secrets are deadly, and attraction can be dangerous; at the same time, these young witches-in-training must protect their city from ancient, malevolent forces.

Currently, Coven Academy ranks as the #1 show worldwide on Disney+, surpassing popular titles like Loki, Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair, High Potential, Adults, and the Outlander spin-off. Even in the U.S., it is the third most-watched show overall, behind only Toy Story 5 and Hocus Pocus, and has held the top spot among TV series for about 48 hours. Also starring in the supernatural drama are Malachi Barton, Louis Thresher, and Tiffani Thiessen as series regulars, with Devon Sawa in a special guest role.

'Coven Academy' Is Essentially 'Wednesday' With Witches

While the second season's renewal remains uncertain, creator Federle expressed optimism during a recent Collider interview. He discussed reimagining The CW's typical approach for a new audience, mentioning that he pitched Coven Academy as a witch-themed version of Wednesday. Given his upbringing with iconic titles like Dawson's Creek, Charmed, The Craft, Hocus Pocus, and Practical Magic, he aimed to incorporate elements reminiscent of those classics into Coven Academy. The series is also scratching the itch that many Disney+ users have for more Agatha All Along, just in time for Halloween.

When asked whether he included any specific references to the mentioned classics, he acknowledged that he hadn't, at least not visually.

“I think there are other ways, whether it’s a tribute to those or not, that we’re just trying to be Disney but not Disney, with needle drops and a soundtrack that hopefully feels maybe a little more modern or at least like something people don’t always tune into Disney to expect. So, there are lots of signals throughout, like with some of the casting.”
