It's been over 7 decades since Disney released its animated classic, Cinderella, and 11 years since its live-action adaptation. Now, Disney wants to bring back this famous Charles Perrault fairy tale, continuing the House of Mouse's trend of bringing beloved animated classics to a new audience. But this new adaptation has a twist.

Cinderella is a simple story about a young girl named Cinderella who lives with her evil stepmother and stepsisters and receives help from her fairy godmother when she is barred from attending the royal ball. But her magic comes at a cost, as it wears off at midnight. Disney released three animated films based on this Disney princess. It wasn't until 2015 that Disney revisited the story with the live-action Cinderella film, starring Lily James, Cate Blanchett, Richard Madden, and Helena Bonham Carter. And now, it's getting another live-action adaptation.

In a recent report, Disney announced plans for a Cinderella spin-off titled Stepsisters, a live-action film based on the evil stepsisters, Anastasia and Drizella. While a full plot and release date have yet to be revealed, Disney confirmed that it tapped the filmmaker behind 2025's The Naked Gun reboot, Akiva Schaffer to direct. This isn't the first time Disney has released a Cinderella story based on the stepsisters. Back in 2007, Disney released the franchise's last animated feature called Cinderella III: A Twist in Time, a straight-to-video sequel which presented a what-if scenario: "What if the slipper didn't fit?" Instead, it was one of her stepsisters that the prince married.

Disney Villain Movies Have Become a Sub-Genre of the Company's Live-Action Remakes

Disney has a long history of producing live-action films based on its animated classics, but only a handful feature the film's evil characters. One example is Maleficent, a 2014 live-action adaptation of Sleeping Beauty starring Angelina Jolie as the evil fairy. While it retells the original story, it's told through Maleficent's point of view and her relationship with Aurora.

Another live-action Disney film based on its evil characters is Cruella, a 2021 prequel to 101 Dalmatiansstarring Emma Stone as Cruella de Vil. This feature tells the origin story of Cruella, an orphan who develops a passion for fashion in 1970s London. And while her obsession with Dalmatians was not fully explored in the live-action feature, the iconic breed does make an appearance and plays a role in the plot.

Stepsisters has yet to announce a release date. In the meantime, you can revisit the animated and live-action Cinderella movies on Disney+. Follow Collider for more updates.
