Fans were taken aback a few years ago when Bob Iger stepped down as Disney’s CEO, handing the job to Bob Chapek on a silver platter. This didn’t last long, however, as Chapek was booted out of his job at Disney after less than three years, with Iger coming back to replace him as CEO. This was reportedly due to strategic and financial maneuvering, but it was clear that many people were unhappy with Chapek’s work with the company. Now 74 years old, it’s been clear for a while now that Bob Iger isn’t Disney’s long-term solution, but the studio seems to have found someone who can step in and replace him.
When Iger first stepped in for Chapek in 2022, it was never intended for him to stay this long. The studio has been searching for a new CEO, but its search hasn’t proved fruitful. However, Disney announced this morning that, after an intense three-year search full of interviews, it has finally found its successor to Bob Iger in Josh D’Amaro. A transition period will begin immediately, with Iger showing D’Amaro the ropes on his way out the door. It’s expected that D’Amaro will resume full control sometime in March, at which time Iger is expected to retire fully.
2025 was a big year for the Walt Disney Company, which had a pair of movies in Lilo & Stitch and Zootopia 2 eclipse $1 billion at the global box office. The studio also released a trio of Marvel movies, starting with Captain America: Brave New World in February before bringing Thunderbolts* to theaters in May and The Fantastic Four: First Steps to screens everywhere at the end of July. 2026 is shaping up to be a big year, too, with the company saving perhaps its biggest release for last.
Will ‘Doomsday’ Be Disney’s Biggest 2026 Movie?
Disney’s biggest movie of 2026 could very well be Avengers: Doomsday, which is now scheduled for release on December 18 after previously being slated to debut in May. It will contend with Dune: Part Three on the same day, though, which could cut into its earnings. Another contender for Disney’s biggest movie of 2026 is the live-action Moana film, which will arrive on July 10. The first trailer for the film racked up almost 10 million views on YouTube.
Stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage of Josh D’Amaro’s takeover as CEO of Disney.
