The other residents of the US top five are either movies that just left theaters (like The Housemaid and Marty Supreme) or streaming-only titles, such as the Netflix survival thriller, Apex. While The Devil Wears Prada may be the outlier as the only catalog title, it points to an interesting new trend. As Mike Pearce, streaming insights lead at JustWatch, explained:
The theatrical rebound is lifting the entire entertainment ecosystem. New cinema releases are fueling renewed interest in catalog titles, with fans rewatching classics at home before heading back to theaters.

It's no secret that audiences are excited about the return of Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway, seeing as The Devil Wears Prada 2 has already made $10 million in previews alone. The juggernaut shows no signs of slowing down, either, as ScreenRant exclusively reported the sequel to be the most-anticipated film in May, using real data and audience metrics from Diesel Labs. In addition, Cinema United's recent CinemaCon survey found it to be the #5 most anticipated film of 2026 overall, and #1 among female moviegoers on JustWatch.
The symbiotic relationship between the sequel in theaters and the original on streaming is a very good sign for the theatrical ecosystem overall, and is sure to repeat with other hotly-anticipated sequels this year, like Toy Story 2.
The Devil Wears Prada is currently available to stream on Disney+, while The Devil Wears Prada 2 is now playing in theaters.
