According to some reports, Disney may be reducing its Star Wars TV show output moving forward, which could have major implications for Star Wars movies and TV shows. Although the franchise has consistently faced scrutiny since Disney purchased Star Wars, many of Star Wars' best TV shows have been made under Disney's direction. In fact, the Star Wars timeline has expanded considerably in the years following Disney's acquisition. Nevertheless, Disney Star Wars has had its fair share of controversies and backlash, as The Acolyte's cancelation revealed, and now, it seems Star Wars may be facing a change.

Per The Direct, insider Daniel Richtman shared that Disney may be reducing its Star Wars TV show output to just one new live-action show each year. According to The Direct, Richtman stated:

"I'm hearing that several series are in development, but it seems they plan to release only one live-action series per year starting in 2025."

Notably, these reports have not been confirmed by Disney; nevertheless, this does seem to be in keeping with Star Wars' recent TV show trends and could very well prove true.

Why Star Wars TV Output Is Being Cut To One A Year

As mentioned by Richtman, according to The Direct, this change would likely specifically pertain to live-action shows. This would also be in keeping with Disney's other recent TV show patterns, such as with Marvel's strategy of two live-action shows per year. In light of the possible company-wide focus on slimming down live-action TV show output, there are likely a number of factors at play.

For one, this move would no doubt be a cost-saving measure. In fact, the same article by The Direct referenced Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger highlighting the need for Disney to both spend less and produce less. Disney's live-action TV shows, Star Wars included, can be in the hundreds of millions of dollars range for just one season. Surely, limiting such productions would therefore be a major consideration when looking to bring down costs.

Moreover, limiting live-action TV shows to just one a year will give Star Wars the chance to really hone in on key projects, rather than saturating the franchise with new shows. Particularly as Star Wars looks to define itself following the conclusion of the Skywalker Saga (and in light of recent turmoil in the franchise), this will be important. This will also allow for Star Wars to put out a range of projects, which the franchise is clearly aiming to do given the upcoming The Mandalorian & Grogu movie and its likely connection to the Ahsoka show.

Moving to one live-action TV show per year would also fit with recent comments from Natasha Liu Bordizzo regarding Ahsoka season 2. According to Bordizzo, the show will begin filming next summer, which would mean that Andor season 2 will be the only live-action TV show Star Wars is releasing in 2025. While these remain unconfirmed reports for now, it seems Star Wars may very well be moving toward a model of only releasing one new live-action TV show per year.
