At Sunday’s Oscars, Diane Warren lost yet again.
It marked her 17th nomination without a win. But she did achieve one mark of distinction: Warren is now the person with the most nominations without a win in Oscar history.
Turns out, it’s a designation she’s embracing.
In an interview today, the songwriter acknowledged seeing headlines dubbing her “the biggest loser like ever in the history of the Academy Awards.”
Her response?
“I’ll take it.”
Note: The Academy did give Warren an honorary Oscar in 2022.
As she explained to NBCLA in an interview, “It means I’ve been nominated all these times.”
Warren then took it a step further, stating, “If I had the choice of winning, you know, an Oscar — and I’ve been nominated all these times — I’m taking the multiple [nominations]. I’m taking the mantle of biggest loser ever. I’d rather have that than the competitive Oscar.”
Just in case some might think her words were misconstrued or that she was misquoted, Warren posted a clip from the NBCLA interview where she addresses all this.
Warren was nominated this year for “Dear Me” from “Dear Me” from her documentary Diane Warren: Relentless.
When she heard that only two of the five nominated songs would be performed at this past weekend’s ceremony, Warren told Deadline, “It is unfair to me and my fellow nominees because you just excluded three songs and chose two. It is my fellow artists who deserve the respect which comes from a nomination, right? Here is how I look at it. Put all the songs on. It is all of us or none of us, and that is what it should be.”
