The Deadpool (2016) director will not give up on another long-delayed comic adaptation. At the time, Tim Miller was an unlikely choice for the superhero blockbuster. He had only ever worked on shorts or as an assistant director on feature films. When he was surprisingly tapped to manage Deadpool and its $58 million budget, it was an opportunity to showcase his talent. Miller took advantage, using the comic adaptation to rocket to success. Deadpool earned exceptional reviews and brought in a gross of $782 million at the box office.

Due to creative differences, Tim Miller did not work on Deadpool 2 or Deadpool & Wolverine .

Hollywood quickly took notice of Miller's talents. He was quickly tapped as a director for Terminator: Dark Fate (2019) and has served as an executive producer for Sonic the Hedgehog (2020), Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022), and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024). He has also become a TV executive producer, as he worked on Secret Level and Love, Death & Robots. For Robots, he was even a director and writer. His work helped him earn three Primetime Emmy Awards. After 2024, however, he will need to find a new project, as he has no official projects listed for 2025.

The Deadpool Director Wants To Work On The Goon

It Has Been In Limbo For Years

Screen Rant's Brennan Klein was present at the Collider's Inside Hollywood with Robert Kirkman, Tim Miller, and Dave Wilson panel at CCXP this weekend, where the renowned creators discussed various projects. Miller, in particular, offered insight into a comic book adaptation that has routinely been delayed for years: The Goon. The first inklings of an adaptation came in 2008, which eventually evolved into a successful $400,000 Kickstarter campaign in 2012. Miller became attached to the project in 2017, but it has since received few updates. Miller, however, remained optimistic at the panel:

“I will never give up on the Goon movie… I will make it.”

Inspired by Eric Powell's comic series about an anti-hero goon, The Goon's adaptation was initially stalled after Disney purchased 20th Century Fox, pausing many projects and leading to the cancelation of numerous others. The entire Fox X-Men universe was brought to an untimely end, though Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) reintroduced many of its characters. With Disney slowly reintroducing Fox concepts, Miller still intends to continue to develop the movie and to fulfill the Kickstarter's promise.

Our Take On The Upcoming Adaptation

It Should Have Already Been Here

The adaptation will be coming at an odd moment for the superhero genre. This is a movie that released a trailer in 2010, shortly before The Avengers was released in 2010. Nearly the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe has developed between the movie's initial trailer and today. Superhero movies are currently on the decline, as both Marvel and DC have seen massive failures in recent years. If The Goon came 10 years ago, it would have been timely. Yet, for all that Tim Miller wants to see the movie come to life, it may be coming too late.
