Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Batman/Superman: World's Finest #48

The death of Jason Todd's Robin was one of the darkest moments in DC history. However, a dark new alt-universe twist has arguably just made Batman's legacy of Robins even darker.

In the latest issue of DC's Batman/Superman: World's Finest by Mark Waid and Marcus To, readers are shown the earliest days of Earth-3's Crime Syndicate, and specifically the relationship between Owlman and Ultraman (Batman and Superman's classic supervillain dopplegangers). Furthermore, we also just learned the dark truth about Owlman's Robin equivalent in this dark alternate version of the DC Universe.

Batman's Legacy of Robins Is Impressive (Each One Has Become Family)

Batman scowls next to his Robins Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, and Damian Wayne in DC Comics

Batman’s history with his various Robins is one of the most compelling aspects of his overall career as The Dark Knight. From Dick Grayson to Damian Wayne, each Robin has very much become a surrogate son in the ever-expanding Bat-Family.

Dick Grayson was DC's first Boy Wonder. Taken in after the death of his parents, Grayson eventually became Bruce’s son in everything but name, eventually stepping out of his shadow as adult hero Nightwing in Gotham's sister city of Blüdhaven.

As previously mentioned, Jason Todd's Robin was killed by the Joker. While his resurrection as the Red Hood made him darker and more aggressive, he's still just as much a Bat-Family member as anyone else (albeit a bit of a black sheep).

Tim Drake's Robin shares Bruce's intellect for science and detective work, and arguably understands the value of Robin more than most. While her Robin tenure was shorter, Stephanie Brown is still a key member of the Bat-Family, especially after her transition as one of Gotham's Batgirls.

The most recent and current Robin is Damian Wayne, Bruce's biological son (who often challenges his father in ways both good and bad).

Across the decades, it's been made clear that while Batman's sidekicks are allies in his crusade, they're not soldiers alone. Each Robin is valued and loved as part of Batman's family...and it's why the latest twist in DC's new World's Finest series is so dark and disturbing.

On Earth-3, Owlman's Legacy of Talons Is Far Darker (Training Captive Child Soldiers)

Owlman Picks A New Talon in World's Finest #48

In Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #48, readers return to Earth-3, where Owlman and Ultraman are investigating Doctor Niles Caulder. During this investigation, Owlman’s Robin equivalent, named “Talon,” is killed in action after providing key intel.

Instead of grief, Owlman coldly calls his Talon a good soldier and orders Alfred to get him a replacement. This happens almost immediately, as it's revealed that Owlman keeps an entire cell of young teens held within the Owlcave.

The implication is that they've all been collectively trained and conditioned, ready to be released at a moment's notice when a current Talon falls to continue aiding Owlman in his various misdeeds. It doesn't even seem like he knows their names.

As such, it's a brutal inversion of the typical Robin legacy in the main DC Universe. With the final page revealing that Batman and Superman are being held captive on Earth-3, one can only imagine what the OG Dark Knight's reaction will be when and if he learns about his dark counterpart's Talons.

Batman/Superman: World's Finest #48 is available now from DC Comics.
