DC writer Jeremy Adams is shaking things up for Arthur Curry with a new series that promises “to change Aquaman in a big way.” Alongside the King of Atlantis’s new hydrokinesis powers, Adams will be diving deep into the character, exploring Arthur in an unprecedented way—one that even includes a “midlife crisis.”

With Adams crafting a story that is universally relatable, there are high expectations for this Aquaman series.

In an interview with AIPT Comics, Jeremy Adams shared his vision for Aquaman’s new solo series, explaining his approach to the character. Adams described his tried-and-true method of identifying gaps—whether in continuity or unexplored aspects of the character’s story—and using those as a foundation.

He elaborated that while the series will feature Aquaman reclaiming his throne after the devastation of Absolute Power and adjusting to his new powers, the heart of the story will focus on Arthur’s identity beyond the trident and crown. At its core, the series will explore Aquaman’s “midlife crisis,” serving as the driving internal conflict.

Adams went on to delve into Aquaman’s impending midlife crisis, revealing that the character will be asking himself, “Who am I? What’s my identity now? I’m a kid, I’m a husband, I’m a king, I’m a hero. What does that make me?” These existential questions will give Adams the opportunity to explore Arthur’s character on a deeper level—something fans can look forward to, as Adams is known for his strength in character-driven stories. Hence, if there’s one thing fans can expect from this solo series, it’s getting to know Aquaman in a completely new way.

This journey of self-discovery is poised to have a significant impact on Arthur’s character. Adams teased that his plans for the hero are “going to change Aquaman in a big way—well, at least until the next writer comes along.” This promise is exciting because it hints at changes that will not only redefine the character but potentially alter the very canon of Aquaman’s story. It’s hard to recall when DC last promised such a major transformation for this iconic character. As such, it will be fascinating to see how the King of Atlantis evolves in the eyes of fans.
