DC has officially announced a new Green Arrow series coming this spring. Alongside the series confirmation, the comic publisher has also revealed the Emerald Archer’s new look, and we can say with complete certainty that it’s one of the boldest and best redesigns in his 85-year comic history.
DC has partially dropped its solicitations for May, with the biggest announcement being two new series joining its Absolute Universe line-up: Absolute Green Arrow by Pornsak Pichetshote and Rafael Albuquerque, launching May 20, and Absolute Catwoman by Che Grayson, Scott Snyder, and Bengal, launching June 10.
Absolute Green Arrow is particularly huge news, given the rumors that have been circulating about the series for months. Now, in addition to the series confirmation, DC has also provided a preview for issue #1, showcasing the Green Arrow and Black Canary of this universe.
Green Arrow Debuts Brutal New Design for Absolute Universe
Absolute Green Arrow #1 Releases May 20, 2026!
The sneak peek of Absolute Green Arrow #1 includes several covers, as well as a text-less four-page preview, all of which give us an incredible first look at the archer’s Absolute Universe design, and it is nothing short of badass. Featuring his classic green archer get-up, this revamped look also includes glowing red eyes and a skull-inspired mask covering the bottom half of his face.
This is, without a doubt, Green Arrow’s best design, as it keeps classic elements of his original costume while incorporating a skull mask that adds a welcome intimidation factor and something completely fresh to the character. As dark romance readers know, mask-mania is alive and thriving right now, making this a design many will likely jump on board with.
DC’s solicitation for Absolute Green Arrow also gives us our first look at Black Canary, thanks to the variant covers by Guillem March and Tula Lotay. Dinah Lance remains the same blonde bombshell fans know and love, but she now sports a pixie cut rather than her typically long locks. Thanks to the synopsis, we also know that Dinah is an “executive protection specialist” in this universe.
Who Is the Green Arrow of the Absolute Universe?
Villain or Hero? DC Confirms Absolute Green Arrow Is a Serial Killer
Those who have been following DC’s Absolute line will recall that Oliver Queen made a short appearance in Al Ewing’s Absolute Evil #1 special. In a shocking twist, Oliver was seemingly murdered by Hawkman in this issue. This leaves readers to wonder who the Green Arrow of the Absolute Universe truly is. There are two main theories behind the archer’s identity.
Some have taken up the theory that it is still Oliver Queen behind the mask, with him having either survived his encounter with Hawkman or been revived as some sort of undead being, hence the glowing red eyes. Others have theorized that Oliver’s protégé and friend Roy Harper, who was also introduced in Absolute Evil, is the one who has taken up the Green Arrow mantle.
Below, readers can find the official synopsis for Absolute Green Arrow #1, which teases a far more sinister role for the archer in this universe:
“A serial killer is slaughtering corrupt billionaires, and the only clue to his identity is the green arrows protruding from the victims' bodies. Executive protection specialist Dinah Lance, also known as Absolute Black Canary, is assigned to uncover the murderer's identity as she investigates a list of suspects drawn from the ranks of DC's most dangerous archers. Each one is uniquely connected to a recently murdered Oliver Queen. A deadly mystery unfolds in this urban horror reimagining of the Emerald Archer's mythos.”
Absolute Green Arrow #1 is available May 20, 2026, from DC Comics!
