David Boreanaz Officially Compares His 'Rockford Files' Reboot to 'Bones'

A cinematic obsessive with the filmic palate of a starving raccoon, Rob London will watch pretty much anything once. With a mind like a steel trap, he's an endless fount of movie and TV trivia, borne from a misspent youth of watching monster movies on TV, perusing the sun-faded goods at the local video rental shop, and staining his fingers with ink from the Video Movie Guide. Areas of interest include science fiction, film noir, horror flicks, '70s disaster pictures, Bond movies, '90s action, giant robots, dinosaurs, super heroes, and the exuberantly schlocky output of Cannon Films. He also enjoys both Star Trek and Star Wars when they're good, and maybe even more when they're bad. As a Canadian, he also has a vested interest in Canadian movies and TV shows, especially the cheesier ones dubbed "Canuxploitation."

An expert on Marvel Comics, he has also written for the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe, and is a member of the Marvel Research Team. He can frequently be found pontificating on comic-book continuity or bemoaning the misfortunes of the Toronto Maple Leafs on his Twitter account.

TV's most iconic answering machine is picking up a new message next year, as David Boreanaz steps into the shoes of one of the small screen's most famous detectives. Before its premiere, Boreanaz shared a little connection between one of his past hit series and his newest projects on social media.

Boreanaz is one of the most consistently employed actors on television. After becoming a regular on Buffy the Vampire Slayer in 1997, it's rare to find a time when he hasn't been starring in a network TV series. He left Buffy to star in his own spin-off, Angel, as a vampire detective in Los Angeles. Following that, he logged twelve years on Bones, then signed up for a seven-year tour of duty on the military drama Seal Team. Seal Team concluded in 2024, and now he's set to return to TV next year.

In the post, Boreanaz notes the 21st anniversary of Bones; Boreanaz starred on the procedural for twelve seasons as FBI Agent Seeley Booth, who teams with forensic anthropologist Temperance "Bones" Brennan (Emily Deschanel) to solve mysterious crimes. The date also happens to coincide with the 52nd anniversary of The Rockford Files, the classic 1970s detective show that starred James Garner as luckless private eye Jim Rockford. Boreanaz will be starring in a new reboot of The Rockford Files, which is set to debut on NBC with a mid-season premiere in the new year; the show was picked up to series earlier this year, and it may very well mark another long-running project for Boreanaz.

What Is the New 'Rockford Files' About?

Boreanaz stars as Jim Rockford, a scrappy private detective who gets sent to jail for a crime he didn't commit. After his release, he returns to his Los Angeles trailer park home base, where he resumes his PI career, helping the helpless for a modest daily fee (plus expenses). Joining Boreanaz on The Rockford Files are Jacki Weaver as Rockford's trailer park neighbor and friend, Felix Solis as a successful defense attorney who has a long shared history with Rockford, and Michaela McManus as an LAPD officer whose romantic relationship with Rockford went sour when he was framed by her fellow officers.
