Known as 'Cyberpunk 2077's' biggest fan, Angharad is a Welsh games writer who thrives in anything related to digital storytelling. If a video game explores the intricacies and horrors of womanhood, she is there.
Thanks to previous work at GAMINGbible, GameByte, The Loadout, Game Luster, Angharad has built a strong understanding of both the digital world and what fans want from it and is eager to share her thoughts and expertise with readers.
Released back in 2016 as the third and final installment in the Dark Souls trilogy, Dark Souls 3 has cemented itself as one of the greatest video games of all time, and is widely regarded as a fitting finale to the beloved FromSoftware series.
Following an unkindled warrior who must rise to embark on a quest to prevent the end of the world, players can expect the usual FromSoftware features such as stunning worlds, loveable characters and, of course, punishing combat which will see you keep coming back for more... for some reason.
Since its launch, Dark Souls 3 has met both critical and commercial success, and on top of its two DLC: Ashes of Ariandel and The Ringed City, it also welcomed a Definitive Edition back in 2013 with the launch of Dark Souls III: The Fire Fades Edition, featuring both the base game and two DLCs.
With this year celebrating the 10-year anniversary of Dark Souls 3, it is no wonder that fans are wanting to step back into the action and relive the experience all over again. However, with the FromSoftware hit first releasing on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, its graphics are considered outdated to many, especially with how far technology has come in the past decade.
Unfortunately, with FromSoftware currently hard at work on a brand-new IP, The Duskbloods, as well as the upcoming Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition, it seems as though an official Dark Souls 3 remaster is not on the horizon anytime soon. Luckily, one creator has us covered with their unofficial project.
Courtesy of fromsoftserve on YouTube, who is also the creator behind the hit Bloodborne PC port, has returned with a Dark Souls 3 remaster which completely overhauls the game's appearance, whilst also maintaining the magic of the original. Showcasing the unofficial remaster on their YouTube channel, we can see just how much of an improvement it is, allowing light and shadows to be drastically improved thanks to the DS3LightingEngine.
In the 40-minute video, we watch fromsoftserve as they run through the opening areas of Dark Souls 3, all whilst showing us the various settings they are using for the mod. As such, we would be able to recreate these stunning visuals which make the 2016 hit look like it was released just yesterday. I don't know about you, but it is just making me want another Dark Souls entry even more.
Nevertheless, following this showcase, fans took to the comments to share their thoughts on a much different-looking Dark Souls 3. "That looks seriously amazing, I'm so happy that this is a thing now," one user shared. "I just wish FromSoftware would do a remaster of all the Dark Souls games," another user admitted. "Reduce LOD and texture pop in, better anti-aliasing, high resolution textures, high resolution dynamic shadows, and better optimization when it comes to loading in assets, so the game doesn't have a heart attack when traversing and just updating the graphics in general to make it on par with Elden Ring and even better."
However, with another fan asking, "Who needs a remaster when we have a DS3 remaster at home?" it seems as though official remakes of the Dark Souls entries remain an area of discourse. If you are on the lookout for a Dark Souls 3 remaster though, make sure to check out this incredible free upgrade.
