Jared's first console was the PS1, wherein he fell for Spider-Man, Spyro the Dragon, and Crash Bandicoot.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a fickle beast, with Daredevil: Born Again being a prime example of how divisive an MCU project can be. It was not until its second season—more than halfway through now, with only three episodes to go—that it confidently hit its true stride, but it will forever live in the warm comfort of the Netflix Daredevil TV show, as well as Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders, whose bones Daredevil: Born Again has exhumed.

While it was neat for Marvel to have its own sort of Red Band-esque line via Netflix, it is great that characters like Daredevil have been more explicitly corralled into the larger MCU mythos. Out of nowhere, Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Episode 4 cemented the show’s place in Marvel’s legendary cosmos, effectively resuscitating the conversation around momentous cameos in the MCU after shows like WandaVision had deflated them, and has provided Marvel with its best possible substitution for beloved Stan Lee cameos.

Daredevil’s Watcher Easter Egg Opens Pandora’s Box

A possible appearance of The Watcher in Daredevil Born Again

Before it was confirmed to be an actual Easter egg, there was debate about whether or not the MCU Watcher Easter egg in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Episode 4 was real. That is how creatively designed it was; it was not a physical being manifested in the sky, but an environmental portrait of a Watcher’s features discerned by the shattered Fogwell’s Gym window.

It was seemingly too perfect to be considered a mere coincidence, particularly with how the lights resembling the Watcher’s eyes were framed in the shot and the shape of their head outlined in the hole left by Daredevil and Bullseye as they fell through the glass. Plus, what makes this Easter egg so special is that it was displayed after Vanessa Fisk was struck by the piece of an ornament that would eventually be her cause of death in the following episode, suggesting that the Watcher was there to observe a pivotal event in the series.

It is ironic, too, that many viewers have admitted that Episode 4 was the turning point of the season for them, when the quality noticeably improves and Daredevil: Born Again becomes the showfans were hoping it would be since its announcement.

Fans Should Keep Their Eyes Peeled From Now On

From here on out, it will not be surprising at all if Marvel chooses to pepper its future shows and movies with Watcher Easter eggs as environmental textures, as it should. This Watcher Easter egg was alarming and terrific in large part because it was so understated, with countless viewers being likely to miss it if it did not go viral on social media, and this lone Easter egg could make every new MCU project a joy to behold in anticipation of finding more like it.

For example, it would be neat to see a Watcher Easter egg deliberately hidden somewhere when Peter Parker first experiences symptoms of the so-called “rebirth” that may have him grow two extra arms and mutate into a Man-Spider creature, perhaps outlined in a cocoon made of organic webbing. Such Easter eggs being reserved for critical junctures and story beats would help immortalize them further, and it would be fantastic to see all the ways they could be creatively embedded in a seemingly ordinary shot.

Of course, every single MCU project after Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 featuring a Watcher Easter egg might hurl the concept overboard, particularly if audiences now know to look for them. Too many Watcher Easter eggs could sully the idea, despite how cool it is, and only time will tell if the MCU does plan to make a tradition out of them, not unlike the wonderful tradition of Marvel movies previously featuring Stan Lee cameos.
