The Marvel Cinematic Universe is teasing another future Captain America through Daredevil: Born Again. The second season of the hit Disney+ series is bringing in more characters who were part of Daredevil's story on Netflix, namely Krysten Ritter's Jessica Jones. She's yet to appear in the three episodes released so far, but the super-strong private investigator is set to return later.
Marvel wants to make sure people are aware of this fact, which has meant an increased focus on Jessica as the studio markets the remaining episodes of season 2. We've seen her talking with Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) and fighting alongside him, but what exactly brings her back into the limelight was not immediately clear. That's now changed with Daredevil: Born Again season 2's midseason trailer.
The new footage shown includes a rather notable moment where it's confirmed Jessica Jones has a daughter now. She says, "They showed up at my house with my daughter there." Jessica becoming a mother is brand new to the MCU, but it is rooted in the comics.
She and Luke Cage had a daughter together named Danielle Cage, and it is presumed that this will also be true in the MCU, even if that fact is not confirmed through Born Again season 2's marketing to this point. The tease of Danielle's existence in Marvel's shared universe helps introduce a new Captain America.
Jessica Jones' Daughter Became Captain America In The Comics
Danielle Cage has been part of Marvel Comics since 2006, and while she's made the majority of her appearances in the main Earth-616 continuity, it's been her multiversal variants that have taken on more power and responsibility. The most notable hails from Earth-15061, which is where Jessica Jones' daughter started donning the stars and stripes and carrying a replica of the iconic shield to become Captain America.
Danielle has the combined superpowers of her mother and father, giving her super strength, bulletproof skin, and much more. She's had instances of fighting Doctor Doom and Ultron, as well as the criminal known as Golden Skull. Her adventures have included traveling to different points in time and other universes, including meeting up with other versions of herself.
Marvel has taken the idea of Danielle as Captain America, which originated in 2015, and made her a recurring hero across the multiverse. There have been multiple versions of Danielle who became Captain America, proving that this is a common path for her life to take, no matter what universe she grows up in.
Being a superhero is in her DNA, and there's even been one instance where Dani's Captain America picked up Mjolnir and was found worthy of the power of Thor, too. As a result, the MCU confirming Jessica Jones has a daughter is a big deal.
Will Danielle Cage Become Captain America In The MCU?
We still have yet to see Danielle Cage on screen or know how old she is, but it's never too early to think about the future implications of her introduction. The biggest of them all is whether she'll follow in Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson's footsteps to become Captain America.
It's unclear if this is part of Marvel's long-term plans at this stage. Knowing that Danielle exists in the main MCU continuity at least makes her part of the equation when thinking about Captain America's future in the shared universe. But if she is destined to become the next Captain America, don't expect it to happen anytime soon.
The MCU is still in the early stages of exploring Sam's time as Captain America. He should get the opportunity to continue occupying that role well after Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Anthony Mackie can still convincingly play the hero for years to come, and Marvel has given every indication they plan to keep him as the one and only Captain America.
If the MCU ever wants two Captain Americas running around at the same time, another chance for Steve to hold the mantle or Bucky Barnes finally taking up the shield are both arguably more likely than Danielle suddenly securing that title.
The quickest scenario for Danielle Cage becoming Captain America in the MCU is that she's included as a multiversal cameo in Doomsday or Secret Wars. That feels unlikely. The more realistic outcome after Daredevil: Born Again confirms her existence is that we have to wait another 5-10 years (or more) to see Jessica Jones' daughter become Captain America.
