WARNING: Spoilers for X-Men #7!Despite the threat that Sentinels have always posed to mutantkind, Cyclops’X-Men team has turned their worst enemies into their greatest assets, setting up a big clash with Rogue. The X-Men have faced many foes, but the evil mutant-detecting Sentinel robots are among their most iconic opponents and have evolved to be the X-Men’s most deadly, as they reckon with Sentinels like Master Mold, Nimrod, and Mother Mold.

In X-Men #7 by Jed Mackay, Netho Diaz, Sean Parsons, John Livesay, Marte Gracia, Fernando Sifuentes, and Clayton Cowles, Beast reveals that Cyclops’ X-Men team has been using the remains of Cerebro and Sentinel technology from the abandoned factory to identify mutants.

 Beast uses Sentinel technology.

Magneto tells Cyclops that they need X-Men now more than ever, and in the present, they’ve found a way to speed up the search by using the same technology used to hunt and eradicate them. With Cyclops and Rogue set to clash in an X-Men civil war due to conflicting ideals, Cyclops has hinted that he’s willing to do whatever’s necessary, which could indicate massive danger for Rogue.

With New Sentinel Tech, Cyclops Shows He’s Willing to Take a Darker Path for the Sake of Mutants

Scott Summers Is Now Using Sentinels and Adopting Magneto’s Mindset

Cyclops is known for his elite strategic and combat abilities, making him one of the X-Men’s best leaders, but he has also been known to be idealistic and unwaveringly stubborn - which is part of the reason why Cyclops has recently aligned with Magneto’s ideals. When meeting with Agent Lundqvist, Scott threatens him, letting him know that he’s willing to become an enemy of the United States government and humanity in the pursuit of protecting mutants. Cyclops has set out to rebuild the X-Men by any means necessary, even if that means reusing the same technology once used to destroy them.

Cyclops has made it clear he does not agree with Rogue’s approach to rebuilding the X-Men.

There have been attempts to use Sentinels for good with Sentinel Squad O*N*E, but using the Sentinels' ability to track mutants as a way to save or recruit them is a game-changing tactic and begs the question of how far Cyclops is willing to go in repurposing the Sentinel technology. With Beast on Cyclops’ team, Hank’s knowledge of the Sentinels gives Cyclops an almost infinite number of possibilities for how he will reuse the factory. This potential - and Cyclops implementing more sinister tactics - might make readers wonder if Cyclops is willing to use Sentinel technology on his fellow X-Men.

X-MEN'S ROGUE PUNCHES CYCLOPS, WHOSE POWERS RUN WILD

Cyclops has made it clear that he does not agree with Rogue’s approach to rebuilding the X-Men, exposing the divide between the two growing X-Men teams and hinting at their impending battle. With both X-Men teams holding serious power, Rogue displaying immense strength in Gail Simone and David Marquez’s Uncanny X-Men run, and Cyclops leading a team of Omege-level mutants, their conflict will be monumental with grave repercussions. Cyclops’ use of Sentinels would change their battle in an interesting but dark and morally gray way, undoubtedly making Cyclops a villain in Rogue's eyes.

As Rogue takes leadership of her own Uncanny X-Men team, she's unlocking a new mutant power that makes her the perfect team leader.

The use of Sentinels will potentially cross a moral line for Rogue, but Rogue’s recruitment of children could set Cyclops off on a war path against his former teammate. Sentinels are one of the X-Men’s most deadly hurdles; if Cyclops uses Sentinel technology to enhance his X-Men, Rogue must find a way to even the playing field lest their battle turn lethal. This highly anticipated X-Men war may just send Cyclops over the edge into villainy once more, and his use of the Sentinels against Rogue would undoubtedly be a dark turn for his character.
