Country music's most hated wife faces ugly new accusations after scandal at Nashville's hallowed ground: 'She'll do anything'

Oversized trucker hats, animal print boots and color-clashing clothing have become a staple for Briley King, wife of country and Americana singer Marcus King.

And just like her outfits, there was no missing Briley's recent career update.

The 35-year-old announced on Instagram earlier this month, via a handwritten note, that despite having never written, recorded or played her own music, she was about to take the legendary Grand Ole Opry stage later that same night.

Her husband Marcus, 30, was present for her big moment, but watched on surreptitiously to allow his wife to shine, one Nashville insider said.

Stepping inside the sacred circle is a feat most artists wait years to accomplish, and there she was doing it less than two weeks after 'hard launching' her music career. She signed a record deal with Atlantic Outpost - Atlantic Music Group's Country and Americana imprint in Nashville - and dutifully changed her LinkedIn bio to 'Artist.'

But many were left confused at the sudden shift in goals, given Briley had made countless claims that she didn't want to be famous and was just Marcus' 'little bird.'

'It's interesting, but not surprising, how quickly Nashville and country music will usher in a famous artist's wife onto the Opry stage but will close those same doors to artists that actually deserve to be in those spaces,' a Nashville industry executive told the Daily Mail.

She even commented on a TikTok video that showed her joining her husband on stage, writing: 'I actually don't love getting up there, I know I'm not as talented as him. But it makes him happy so I do it.'

But her dislike for those 'getting up there' moments came into question the more frequent they became, with Briley joining Marcus on stage at festivals, on tour and at the Opry to perform duets or sing harmonies. The two sang Goodbye Carolina during his set at Willie Nelson's Outlaw Music Festival in 2023 and were branded a power couple after performing together at Stagecoach in April this year. She even joined him in the studio to sing background vocals on his 2024 album Mood Swings.

She has now released her first two original songs, Bad Guy and Keepin' Caroline, after announcing via Instagram that she was 'adding singer/songwriter to the resume.'

Netizens were quick to make claims that her marriage to the Marcus King Band frontman appeared to be a long play all along.

'Everything about her screams desperate for fame and attention. The pick-me act, the fake accent, the cringe singing, she'll do anything for the spotlight,' one person wrote on Reddit.

'She locked down Marcus the second she realized he was the fastest shortcut to the music industry access she'd been failing to earn for over a decade,' commented another.

Marcus 'fell in love hard' when he met Briley around July 2021. They were engaged seven months later and tied the knot in February 2023 at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville. The wedding was officiated by Country Music Hall of Famer Jamey Johnson, and singer Leah Blevins performed during the ceremony.

Marcus detailed their meet-cute on the Zach Sang Show podcast in November 2025, revealing that after a kiss - and an STI test that she had demanded - they started dating.

Clearly unable to stop gushing over his wife, he also told People magazine: 'She waltzed up on my bus like she owned it, and I was taken with her sweet southern drawl. She asked to connect to the Bluetooth, blared Linda Ronstadt and Aretha Franklin and we sang and danced till it was time for the bus to leave. I told her the next morning to quit her job and marry me instead.'

Although she did end up leaving her day job, she didn't stop working. Not long after tying the knot, she launched Little Bird Trucking, a trucker hat business named after Marcus' nickname for her.

Her hats have been worn by stars including Lainey Wilson and Post Malone and were stocked in the Opry store, where she did a collaboration honoring Minnie Pearl for the venue's 100th birthday.

Despite its success, Briley, who listed herself as 'CFO, COO, CEO, logistics, HR, customer service and founder,' struggled to escape claims that she built a business off the back of her husband's career.

'There are nepo babies and then there are nepo wives. And she is that,' our industry executive told us.

'She annoys a lot of people because she's playing the victim card with [them] attacking her for using her husband to get a career, but she is leaning into that storyline pretty easily.'

Another country music executive said they felt her actions made denying those accusations difficult.

'It wouldn't be a problem if she claimed it and stood ten toes down about wanting a career. The issue is playing coy only to be maneuvering in the background this whole time,' they said. 'It feels a bit disingenuous and unfortunately makes these rumors about her feel more true.'

After all, this is not Briley's first foray into music.

Hailing from a small town in Kinston, North Carolina, Briley said she was working a normal job at a bank when she met Marcus and her 'life changed overnight.' In a 2025 Country Living interview, she said she 'loved being sidecar to Marcus King.'

But it seems Briley had always had a keen interest in performing, once telling citylifestyle.com that at age seven she wanted to take singing lessons, adding how when growing up she 'danced, sang, did gymnastics, theater, basketball, softball - anything I could get involved in.'

And sing she did - long before she met Marcus.

Although many would likely claim her viral cover of The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia - a track that amassed millions of views after she sang it backstage during the Marcus King Band Family Reunion Festival last year - was her first time dabbling in her own music career, it is not the case.

In fact she was releasing cover songs under her maiden name, Briley Hussey, as far back as 2016 - something she has seemingly tried to forget.

Such songs have since been removed from streaming platforms, but a 2017 video on YouTube shows Hussey performing a cover of Darius Rucker's Wagon Wheel at the Kinston, North Carolina, BBQ Festival.

Under the pressures of criticism, the second executive alleged Briley 'of course' had to shift her narrative about performing. And shift it she did on Tuesday when she posted a carousel of photos on Instagram and told her followers how she allegedly sang covers previously at 'weddings, online, bars' because it helped her 'keep the lights on when the wages of my many jobs in corporate couldn't always pay the bills.'

'She had to do damage control,' they said. 'She started to hear people were noticing the discrepancies and changed her story. I'm not surprised and no one should be.'

Back when she first started releasing music, she looked physically different and her accent had less of a prominent southern twang, even as recent as a 2022 TikTok and in 2020 when videos show her singing the national anthem and speaking at multiple Donald Trump political rallies in North Carolina.

The Daily Mail spoke to a source from Briley's hometown, who said they questioned Briley originally saying she didn't want to perform. They also claimed marrying Marcus appeared 'opportunistic.'

'Growing up she was always performing at pageants and singing the national anthem,' they said. 'She was always a girl that was singing and dancing, always in the performing arts, always wanted to do things on stage.'

The 'gold digger' and 'nepo wife' monikers aren't the only ones plaguing Briley, as multiple Nashville insiders and people from her hometown have alleged she can be 'mean.'

'She was not very well liked in high school,' the source said. 'She had all the ingredients to be a super popular girl physically but she had a really bad personality. Her personality sucked. She was not a nice person.'

Our sources also alleged that there were multiple instances of Briley publicly humiliating people in her hometown ten years ago. One case seemingly caused her to delete her Twitter account after backlash.

Briley seems unfazed by the criticism, posting photos on social media with captions like 'gold diggers need love too.' She also jokingly warned, 'haters clear ur schedules [sic]' when she announced she was 'hard launching a music career this week.'

But she may want to spare a thought for Marcus, the man who many claim has afforded her such opportunities. It was only recently that he candidly told Rolling Stone how online trolls were one of the hardest things he has to deal with.

'Being in that public eye and trying to ignore the things that people say about you or say about your partner - especially the things that [are] just untrue - but not wanting to validate somebody's nastiness by trying to dispute their allegations,' he said. 'The court of public opinion is so f****d, because there's no check and balance.'

But it is something he may have to get accustomed to, for Briley is only just getting started, and according to our first insider she 'definitely feels like she has something to prove, which rightfully so.'

The Daily Mail has contacted representatives for Briley and Marcus for comment.
