Emmy winner and Oscar and Tony nominee Colman Domingo will be presented with the President’s Award at this year’s NAACP Image Awards.
Domingo — who won the Emmy for his work on HBO’s “Euphoria” and will next portray Joe Jackson in the upcoming Lionsgate movie “Michael,” among a slew of high-profile projects — will be presented with the President’s Award during the 57th annual awards ceremony on Saturday, Feb. 28. Deon Cole returns to host the show, broadcast live on BET and CBS from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.
The President’s Award is presented in “recognition of special achievement and distinguished public service,” with Domingo saluted specifically for “the breadth and depth of his leadership, artistry, and cultural impact.” Previous recipients include Usher, Gabrielle Union-Wade and Dwyane Wade, Rihanna, LeBron James, Kerry Washington, Spike Lee, Muhammad Ali, Jesse Jackson, Colin Powell, Condoleezza Rice, Shawn Jay-Z Carter and Lauryn Hill. Last year, the award went to Dave Chappelle.
The special honor comes amid a busy year for Domingo, as he reprises his Emmy-winning role on “Euphoria” for Season 3, which premieres this April on HBO. He will also star in the second season of “The Four Seasons” for Netflix. On the big screen, he follows up Antoine Fuqua’s “Michael” with a key role in Steven Spielberg’s “Disclosure Day,” out this July, and Jaume Collet-Serra’s Netflix thriller “An Innocent Girl.”
“Across film, television, and theater, Colman has consistently chosen work that challenges narratives, expands representation, and centers humanity with dignity and grace,” stated NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson. “He is not only exemplary at his craft, but intentional in how he uses his platform to uplift stories that might otherwise go unheard. As an artist, he leads with integrity, fearlessness, and a deep commitment to community, making him a model for what it means to build a legacy that extends far beyond the stage or screen.”
This year, Domingo is also nominated for two NAACP Image Awards for his role and directing in “The Four Seasons,” as well as part of the ensemble cast of “Wicked: For Good.” He already has four Image Awards, including a double win in 2024 for outstanding actor in a motion picture for “Rustin” and outstanding supporting actor in a motion picture for “The Color Purple.”
“Colman Domingo represents the power of creativity to bring people together and move culture forward,” added BET president Louis Carr. “At BET, our commitment has always been to community, culture, and connection, and Colman’s impact reflects those values in action. The way he honors the stories and legacy that came before us while inspiring future generations is what makes his influence so meaningful. We’re proud to celebrate his extraordinary contributions and to recognize the lasting impact of his vision and unwavering commitment to excellence.”
Other special honorees during this year’s NAACP Image Awards week include Viola Davis, who will be presented with the Chairman’s Award during the telecast; A$AP Rocky, who will receive the Vanguard Award for fashion, presented at the annual fashion show on Friday, Feb. 27; and Rev. Dr. Jamal-Harrison Bryant, who will receive the prestigious Mildred Bond Roxborough Social Justice Impact Award at the Creative Honors on Thursday, Feb. 26.
