Colin Farrell can certainly deliver an unsettling performance, and fans will have the chance to check out a very particular one next week.
Farrell's most noteworthy roles in the last few years are undoubtedly his Oscar-nominated turn in The Banshees of Inisherin (nominated for Best Picture against Everything Everywhere All at Once) and his villainous part in The Batman. Subsequently, he headlined The Batman's highly acclaimed TV miniseries The Penguin, and will return as Oz Cobb in The Batman: Part II.
But Farrell's star status was cemented long before these two projects; they have merely provided him with renewed fame. His filmography also includes In Bruges, Minority Report, The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Horrible Bosses, Seven Psychopaths, and more. Moreover, one of the quieter releases he starred in is a Sofia Coppola period drama and psychological thriller that is getting a new streaming home.
The Beguiled, which will be added to Netflix on July 1, stars Farrell alongside Nicole Kidman and is based on the novel by Thomas Cullinan. The story centers on a girls' school in Virginia during the Civil War — run by Miss Martha (Kidman), who oversees the five young women who live there — that is happened upon by a wounded Union soldier, whose presence stirs jealousy and leads to betrayal among the smitten girls.
The novel, published in 1966, was previously adapted, making Coppola's version also a remake. The 1971 film, referred to as a Southern Gothic psychological thriller, was directed by Don Siegel (Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Escape from Alcatraz) and starred Clint Eastwood in Farrell's eventual role and Geraldine Page as Martha.
The cast of the 2017 iteration also includes Coppola's longtime collaborator Kirsten Dunst as the school's only other teacher; Elle Fanning, Oona Laurence, Angourie Rice, Emma Howard, and Addison Riecke play their wards. The Beguiled is not the most critically acclaimed of its director's work — with a 79% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and no Oscar nominations to speak of — but here at ScreenRant, it was ranked as Sofia Coppola's best movie.
The Beguiled marks Farrell's first and only time working with Sofia Coppola, the same milestone for several other actors in the movie. The Netflix library also includes one of Farrell's most recent feature films, another psychological drama, 2025's The Ballad of a Small Player. Ahead of his return to his now-iconic villain role, subscribers should watch these underrated movies, as they are readily available.
The Beguiled will be streaming on Netflix from July 1, 2026.
