Claire Danes reveals she had a 'convulsive meltdown' over her unplanned pregnancy at 44

Claire Danes has opened up about her unplanned third pregnancy.

The 46-year-old actress was a guest on Amy Poehler's Good Hang podcast, and recalled the visceral reaction she to finding out she was expecting at age 44.

'I called my OBGYN in convulsive tears. It was a pure like, meltdown,' she shared.

Danes shares three kids with husband Hugh Dancy – sons Rowan, 13, Cyrus, seven, and a two-year-old daughter whose name she hasn't revealed publicly.

She admitted: 'None of this was by design. I didn't know it was physically possible. I was 44. And actually, Rowan was very hard-earned. I had to do two rounds of IVF.'

'It was all meltdown,' she emphasized before gushing about her daughter, 'And then this beautiful girl emerged and she's the best, and none of it was up to me and I'm just delighted.'

The longtime performer previously got candid about the complicated feelings that arose after unexpectedly getting pregnant with her 'oopsy daisy third baby.'

On the SmartLess podcast in November, she said about her last pregnancy, 'I was so old when that happened. I was 44. I didn't think it was possible! I really didn't. I was terrified but all was okay.'

'Well, it was actually really interesting because I did not foresee this at all. And it was weird. Suddenly I felt like a funny shame,' the three-time Emmy winner admitted.

'I was naughty. I had been caught fornicating past the point I was meant to. It was weird, and it was like I found an edge that I hadn't been quite conscious of.'

The Beast in Me producer-star recalled, 'I got really, really lucky. My OB/GYN was like, "You know, you're having another boy." But no!' 

Host Jason Bateman replied: 'You would have been pissed off. You definitely would have been pissed off.'

'I would have been delighted,' Danes corrected. 'But I am more delighted that I [have a girl]. She's pretty cool and she loves a tutu.'

The New York native added: 'But it's a trip! I mean, I have a teenager and a toddler.'

Danes and Dancy tied the knot in 2009 and she debuted her tiny bump at the 80th Golden Globes in January 2023, wearing a plunging white Giambattista Valli gown with a pink bow and a fringe hem.

During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon later that year, the now-mom of three revealed how her sons reacted when they found out she was pregnant.

She said her older son Cyrus 'was sort of resigned to it,' as she joked about her younger son: 'I mean, the worst has already happened – his name is Rowan.'

The My So-Called Life alum noted, 'But Rowan has more to lose, like, he has more at stake. And he was categorically opposed to the idea.

'He said, "Yeah, no, no, no, I don't like it. I like peace, Mama." I was like, that's rich because that dude does not shut up.'

The blonde beauty shared that the youngster had a cute suggestion saying, 'When it comes out of your tummy, we'll give it to a family that doesn't have a baby because we're done.'

The Fleishman is in Trouble star was able to sway Rowan by explaining his future role as a big brother.

'He was less than thrilled, but then we talked about how when the baby comes out, it's going to be pretty dumb [and] doesn't know a lot, [and will] need assistance and some educating.'
