As Rebecca Ferguson and Chris Pratt prepare for the launch of their respective new franchise movies over the next couple of weeks, their overlooked sci-fi thriller from earlier this year is now heading for redemption on streaming.
The Amazon MGM Studios-distributed sci-fi thriller struggled in theaters at the start of 2026. While Mercy opened in the number one spot at the North American box office with an approximate $11 million weekend haul, the AI-focused film ended its theatrical run at only $54.3 million worldwide. Notably, the film also debuted the same weekend that a major winter storm hit a significant portion of the United States.
Mercy's box office failed to match its reported $60 million production budget, making it one of the year's first substantial commercial disappointments. Throughout its first month in theaters, Mercy was up against the enduring legs of films like December 2025's Avatar: Fire and Ash, November's Zootopia 2, Lionsgate's The Housemaid, and 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.
With star power led by Marvel and Mario actor Chris Pratt and Dune's Rebecca Ferguson, Mercy follows a detective (Pratt) accused of murdering his wife, who has to prove his innocence in the crime to an AI judge (Ferguson). In addition to Ferguson and Pratt, the cast of Mercy features Annabelle Wallis, Kali Reis, Chris Sullivan, and Kylie Rogers.

Alongside its theatrical struggles, Mercy also faced obstacles regarding its reception from critics. Mercy currently holds a meager 25% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, aggregated from 125 reviews. However, the sci-fi thriller has fared better with audience reviews thus far, holding a far better 83% rating on the Popcornmeter. Check out ScreenRant's review of Mercy here.
Now that Mercy will become more widely available to Prime Video subscribers this Sunday, the film is expected to see a new resurgence in popularity just two months after its theatrical premiere. While it holds down the streaming front at the end of the weekend, Amazon MGM Studios is hoping for a new theatrical sci-fi hit with the release of Ryan Gosling's acclaimed Project Hail Mary on March 20.
The streaming debut of Mercy on Prime Video also comes amid an exciting couple of weeks for its two main stars, keeping the momentum going before their next major franchise releases. On Friday, March 20, Rebecca Ferguson's Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man officially releases on Netflix, following its limited theatrical release this month. Meanwhile, Chris Pratt is gearing up for the long-awaited premiere of his juggernaut franchise sequel The Super Mario Galaxy Movie on April 1.
Ferguson's big year is also just getting started after Mercy's streaming release, as her hit Apple TV sci-fi series Silo will return this summer before the premiere of the highly-anticipated Dune: Part Three on December 18. Though Ferguson will have a much smaller role in the third film compared to her past two appearances, Dune 3's first trailer release this week has still garnered plenty of excitement for her return as Lady Jessica.
