It has been five years since The Game Awards announced Star Wars' most ambitious games. In 2021, fans and industry veterans alike watched as Quantic Dream teamed up with Lucasfilm to reveal Star Wars Eclipse, teasing the world about the big release. Of course, you may be wondering what is going on with the game now that all these years have passed and honestly? All of us are waiting for an update.

Now, it seems a small piece of information has gone live about the Star Wars title. Over on Insider Gaming Weekly, the podcast dropped an unofficial update on Star Wars Eclipse that has fans heated. According to the show, development on the Star Wars game is "very slow going", which can be a death sentence for even the most anticipated of titles.

Star Wars Eclipse Could Be A Long Way Away

As noted by Insider Gaming Weekly, the show's insider source claims Star Wars Eclipse made "very little progress over months" of work. The show went on to note that much of the new-gen game is already done, but plenty of finishing touches are needed. Sources say this final stretch is causing problems behind the scenes, leaving fans to question when Star Wars Eclipse will make its grand launch.

'The game, at this stage, is still looking to be years off from completion," the show's source alleged. When asked what could be done to streamline Star Wars Eclipse, the same source said more staff would help the development team, but executives aren't interested in expanding labor costs. Quantic Dreams and co-developer NetEase are biding time as a future release nears launch, and if all goes well, the release of games like Spellcasters Chronicles will help bankroll the additional work that Star Wars Eclipse needs.

"At this stage, the long-term outlook is less driven by creative capabilities and more by financial viability,” the source explained. “Should Spellcasters fail commercially, NetEase is expected to reevaluate its commitment to the studio and could opt to discontinue further investment.”

Star Wars Games Haven't Been Doing Great Lately

Star Wars Eclipse Development Troubles Quantic Dream Might Be Canceled Release Date Years Away

With the future of Star Wars Eclipse looking uncertain, all eyes are on the franchise. The upcoming title was meant to usher gamers into The High Republic era, detailing an original story and brand-new characters within the Outer Rim. With production stalled on Star Wars Eclipse, the game's promised release is on shaky ground, and this blow is just one of several to hit the Star Wars gaming sphere in recent years.

Over the past decade, Star Wars' approach to gaming has been high profile with low success. In 2017, Star Wars Battlefront II spurned gamers globally with its controversial microtransactions that nearly killed the title outright. A few years later, Star Wars: Squadron struggled to amass sales as commercial figures dipped below Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, one of the franchise's few standout games in recent years. The franchise flopped yet again in 2024 as Star Wars Outlaw flubbed its huge budget with low sales. With just one million copies sold in its first month, Star Wars Outlaws put the franchise's gaming sector in jeopardy. Now, fans are starting to eye Star Wars Eclipse with trepidation as the ambitious project may be the next Star Wars title to fumble the bag.
