A lot of the success of the crossover can be attributed to the franchise's police series, with NBC heavily promoting the returns of former One Chicago regulars Jesse Lee Soffer and Tracy Spiridakos as Halstead and Upton, respectively. It was enough that all three shows hit their season highs in viewership on the night.
Of course, the much-hyped appearances of Halstead and Upton were temporary, and the post-crossover episodes delivered the long-awaited return of Ruzek. Patrick John Flueger had taken a leave of absence in the first half of season 13, but PD brought him back in the second half with some standout episodes.
Add on Burgess' need to balance her detective work with motherhood, Atwater facing impending fatherhood, Torres regularly drowning himself in guilt, Voight dealing with CPD politics, and newcomer Imani getting a lot of screentime, Chicago PD had plenty going on even before big news this spring.
Chicago PD Season 14 Has Been Confirmed By NBC
Chicago PD fans didn't have to head into the finale while dreading the possibility of unresolved cliffhangers, since NBC officially renewed the One Chicago show for season 14 in March 2026. Adding on the Chicago Fire and Chicago Med renewals, the whole crew will be back in primetime for more One Chicago Wednesdays.
NBC is continuing the usual Wednesday lineup, which has been made up of Med at 8 p.m. ET, Fire at 9 p.m. ET, and PD at 10 p.m. ET ever since 2019. Chicago Justice, the only One Chicago series ever to flop, didn't have the benefit of a full lineup despite featuring a former PD star.
Unlike what's happening on Chicago Fire, there's no indication at the time of writing that Gwen Sigan will be departing Chicago PD as showrunner. Season 14 is set to be her sixth in that role after moving up to the job for season 9.
When New Episodes Of Chicago PD Will Release
The date for the first One Chicago Wednesday following Chicago PD's season 13 finale hasn't been confirmed yet, but the drama will be back in primetime starting in the fall of the 2026-2027 TV season. NBC is continuing the order of the shows for at least another season, with Med followed by Fire and then PD.
The premiere window for another show likely gives away when One Chicago will arrive in the fall. Peter Krause is coming to NBC for his first lead role after 9-1-1, and the network has confirmed a premiere for Line of Fire in September. Assuming that applies to the majority of scripted dramas, the Windy City stories will be back in September as well.
The One Chicago block has evidently been so successful for NBC that Wednesdays are the only nights that change for the fall. In addition to Line of Fire joining The Voice on Mondays, basketball takes over Tuesdays with NBA broadcasts, The Traitors joins Law & Order and SVU on Thursdays, and the unfortunate cancellation of Stumble adds Newlyweds to Fridays.
What Chicago PD Season 14's Story Could Be About
While Chicago PD is generally the most procedural One Chicago TV show, there are some season 13 plot threads that presumably will carry into season 14. Atwater is expecting a child with Officer Fox after a hookup back in late October, and the timing could be just right for the bundle of joy to be born early next season.
Burgess and Ruzek decided to sell their house and move so that Makayla could attend a better school, although the move wasn't so far away that they couldn't stay with the CPD. Ruzek also lost his father late in season 13, so there's the chance that Chicago PD could pick up that plot in the fall.
Torres seems to be on the mend from his latest guilt trip, and Voight tends to roll with the punches as they come. Imani's future is uncertain as well. The last two episodes of season 13 focused heavily on her and her need to rescue her long-lost sister, and a cliffhanger would certainly need her on board for the fall.
That said, PD has a history of writing newcomers off after just one season during Gwen Sigan's tenure as showrunner. Lisseth Chavez's Vanessa Rojas was the first, and PD has never provided an explanation for Rojas' abrupt absence. Toya Turner's Kiana Cook was cut between seasons 12 and 13, so now it's a waiting game to see if Imani will still be part of the team in season 14.
Another three-part crossover with Chicago Med and Chicago Fire is likely after the smash success of the 2026 event, but Chicago PD will almost certainly continue the usual mini-crossovers of sharing characters with the other two shows in the fall.
