Agnes O'Casey (as Liz Gold), Felix Kammerer (as Hans-Dieter Mundt), Dan Stevens (Bill Haydon), Volker Bruch (Emmanuel Rapp), Saskia Rosendahl (Lotte Gamp), Patrick Güldenberg (Dr. Karl Riemeck), Safia Oakley-Green (Molly Gibson), Jake Dunn (Peter Guillam) and Ariyon Bakare (Cy Aflon) were just announced as their co-stars in the eight-episode espionage thriller.
This isn't the first time that O'Casey has played Liz Gold. She previously starred in the stage production of The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, which recently ended its run in the West End.
Other previously announced cast members include Daniel Brühl as Josef Fiedler, Devrim Lingnau Islamoğlu as Doris Quinz.
The showrunners and writers on Legacy of Spies are Stephen Cornwell and Clarisa Ingram, while Michael Lennox is the lead director who's also serving as an executive producer alongside Cornwell, Macfadyen, Hunnam, Graham Yost, Simon Cornwell, Michele Wolkoff Malte Grunert, Chris Rice, Joe Tsai, Susanne Bier, Mike Lesslie, Gaynor Holmes, Nick Lambon, Nick Cornwell, Sam Costin and Nancy Bray.
In a statement, Lennox explained that le Carré's work "defined the espionage genre but also disrupted it, turned it on its head. His work was daring, stripped back and lived in the present, revealing the profoundly human, life-and-death stakes behind the intrique." He went on to say that Legacy of Spies embodies that "same spirit," while cast member Macfadyen expressed how "thrilled" he is to be playing George Smiley and to step into "le Carré's world in the company of such talented actors and producers."
Stephen and Simon Cornwell, who are two of le Carré's sons, added that they are grateful to the BBC and MGM+ for giving them the opportunity to "fulfill our collective vision for the show" as they bring the "rich canvas of characters that our dad created in his spell-binding novels" to life on the small screen.
While a premiere date hasn't been announced yet, Legacy of Spies will eventually stream on BBC iPlayer and air on BBC One in the UK and will be available on MGM+ in the United States.
