Charlie Day Teases ‘It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’ Season 18: Return Of Guillermo Del Toro & The McPoyles In A Set Of “Fairly Large Episodes”

Charlie Day gave a nice preview of what we can expect from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 18 in a Friday sitdown at Deadline’s SXSW Studio.

“We’re right in the middle of the new season of Sunny right now. I’ve got to go back tonight and I’m going to film tomorrow,” he said. “We have the McPoyles coming back, and we also have Guillermo del Toro coming back, reprising his role of Pappy McPoyle. It’s going to be a great season.”

This time around, Day shared, “They’re all fairly large episodes. But I feel like Season 17, we got a bit of our fastball back, and we brought back the same room and had the same chemistry. So Season 18 here, I think, is going to just pick up right where we left off. I can guarantee there will be some episodes that people will love.”

Now the longest-running live-action sitcom in TV history, It’s Always Sunny is an FX comedy following a group of deeply self-absorbed friends — played by Day, Glenn Howerton, series creator Rob Mac, Kaitlin Olson, and Danny DeVito — and their chaotic misadventures while running the failing Philadelphia dive bar Paddy’s Pub.

Some of the show’s most popular recurring characters, The McPoyles are a similarly bizarre group who often wind up in conflict with the core characters. Nate Mooney and Jimmi Simpson portray brothers Ryan and Liam McPoyle, an unsettling pair of milk-drinking, whisper-shouting ne’er-do-wells, and in Season 8 episode “The Maureen Ponderosa Wedding Massacre,” Oscar-winning filmmaker Del Toro was introduced as Pappy, the creepy, soft-spoken elder of the clan. That first appearance was in 2012, with Del Toro returning for a second episode in 2016.

It’s Always Sunny returned for its 17th go-round last July and has not yet set a preiere date for its new season.

Day is at SXSW in support of his starring role in Kill Me, a darkly comedic whodunnit that premiered at the Austin, TX festival on Thursday, which he also produced. For our video interview with him, co-stars Allison Williams and Giancarlo Esposito, and filmmaker Peter Warren, check back later.
