Ryan O'Rourke is a Senior News Writer at Collider with a specific interest in all things adult animation, video game adaptations, and the work of Mike Flanagan. He is also an experienced baseball writer with over six years of articles between multiple outlets, most notably FanSided's CubbiesCrib. Whether it's taking in a baseball game, a new season of Futurama or Castlevania: Nocturne, or playing the latest From Software title, he is always finding ways to show his fandom. When it comes to gaming and anything that takes inspiration from it, he is deeply opinionated on what's going on. Outside of entertainment, he's a graduate of Eureka College with a Bachelor's in Communication where he honed his craft as a writer. Between The IV Leader at Illinois Valley Community College and The Pegasus at Eureka, he spent the majority of his college career publishing articles on everything from politics to campus happenings and, of course, entertainment for the student body. Those principles he learned covering the 2020 election, Palestine, and so much more are brought here to Collider, where he has gleefully written on everything from the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes to Nathan Lane baby-birding sewer boys.

Fresh off the success of his wild 2025 true crime drama Roofman, Channing Tatum returned to Sundance this year with yet another film that's been turning heads: the dark thriller Josephine. It's been hailed as a standout of the festival and one of the 21 Jump Street star's best performances, earning a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes so far and a 9/10 review from Collider's Taylor Gates. Although that film is still waiting for a theatrical release, another of the star's more overlooked genre films has returned to the streaming charts. 2024's Blink Twice rose to sixth place on HBO Max this week, barely topping last year's How to Train Your Dragon live-action remake.

Blink Twice turns Tatum's usual charisma into something far more sinister, casting him as billionaire tech mogul Slater King. During a fundraising gala, King encounters cocktail waitress Frida (Naomi Ackie) and invites her back to his luxurious private island for a once-in-a-lifetime vacation after the two hit it off. Initially, it's a dream come true, as Frida and her friend Jess (Alia Shawkat) enjoy partying with the magnate, his pals, and other invitees and soaking up the sun, but she can't shake the feeling that something is horrifically off about the whole situation. A series of strange occurrences, including the disappearance of Jess, ultimately leave her questioning her reality as she struggles to uncover the island's dark secrets and King's true intentions.

The stylish, timely #MeToo thriller turned gratifying revenge tale by the end marked the directorial debut of The Batman star Zoë Kravitz, who also served as co-writer with E.T. Feigenbaum. With a star-studded cast that paired Ackie, Tatum, and Shawkat with, among others, Christian Slater, Simon Rex, Adria Arjona, Haley Joel Osment, Levon Hawke, Geena Davis, and Kyle MacLachlan, it proved to be a modest hit at the box office, earning $48.1 million on a budget of $20 million, but reviews were even more positive. Critics powered the debut to a Certified Fresh 74% on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences similarly gave it a 71%. While Tatum's against-type performance as Slater was a big draw, Ackie and Arjona also got plenty of praise, as did the rest of the bunch in a film that wasn't afraid to mix a bit of comedy in with its serious mystery and message.

What To Expect From Tatum's Next Film, 'Josephine'

Josephine is another more dramatic turn for Tatum, though he's far from the despicable presence he brings to Blink Twice. Directed by Beth de Araújo, the film centers on the titular eight-year-old girl (Mason Reeves) who's forever changed after witnessing a vicious assault at Golden Gate Park. Plagued by fear and paranoia, she begins acting out in hopes of finding some way of regaining a sense of safety and control after experiencing the harsh reality of the world around her. However, her parents, played by Tatum and Gemma Chan, feel powerless to help her. It's a deeply personal story for the writer-director, based on a similar experience she had at the same age, and it will serve as the follow-up to her divisive and disturbing previous feature, Soft & Quiet.

Blink Twice is now available on HBO Max. Stay tuned here at Collider for more on all the biggest hits on streaming throughout the year.
