As if to wake the dead, Netflix dropped the first official trailer for the second season of Castlevania: Nocturne.
Castlevania: Nocturne is the sequel series of Netflix’s video game adaptation of Konami’s best-selling vampire killing game, Castlevania. Unlike the original show, which followed the trio of Trevor Belmont, Sypha Belnades, and Alucard joining forces to end Dracula and his horde of vampires’ reign of tyranny, Nocturne sees Trevor and Sypha’s descendant, Richter, join forces with Alucard to defeat the vampire messiah, Erzsebeth Báthory. In contrast to Dracula’s half-hearted plot to rid the world of humans after they burned his wife at the stake, Erzsebeth plans to blot out the sun and allow vampires to walk the earth at their leisure.
In typical Powerhouse Animation studio flair, the official trailer for the upcoming season looks to raise the bar for video game adaptations to new heights and promises yet another bloody good time.
The trailer seemingly picks up off the heels of the first season’s finale, which saw Richter, his adopted sister Maria Renard, and Annette on the backfoot of Erzsebeth’s rise to power—a rise that saw Maria’s mother, Tera, sacrifice herself and become an unholy disciple of Erzsebeth’s. Just when all hope was lost, Alucard made a buzzer-beater appearance, saving the troupe and aligning himself with Trevor’s great-great-great (there are at least nine more greats to add here) grandson.
As is tradition, the haughty Richter and the snarky Alucard appear to butt heads on how exactly they’ll go about ridding the world of Erzsebeth while they train up for battle. Seeing as how the latter half of the trailer shows everyone fighting like the dickens, it’s safe to assume they will get over their bickering and kick all of the vampire’s generous asses. The two-minute trailer also showed us Olrox, Mizrak, and Juste Belmont, teasing their involvement on Alucard and Richter’s side in the ensuing battle to save humanity.
Netflix announced Castlevania: Nocturne was renewed for a second season a week after it premiered on the streamer in October 2023. In celebration of its renewal, showrunner Clive Bradley and Kevin Kolde released a joint statement thanking fans for their support and sharing their excitement for “the next chapter in the rise of Richter Belmont.” Before the newly released trailer, all folks had to morsel on was a storyboard and concept art trailer for the upcoming season last October and a first look trailer in September. Now, we must wait just a few weeks into 2025 to see how Richter and pals’ story plays out.
Castlevania: Nocturne season two premieres on Netflix January 16.
