Capturing the Global Spirit: Powerful Photos From This Year’s HIPA Awards

4 hours ago 5

Photography has always been a universal language one that crosses borders, cultures, and generations. Every once in a while, a competition comes along that reminds the world just how powerful a single frame can be. The Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award, widely known as HIPA Awards, is exactly that kind of stage. Since its launch in 2011 in Dubai, the competition has grown into one of the most respected photography awards on the planet, attracting thousands of photographers who are eager to share stories that resonate across the globe.

This year theme is Power, pushed photographers to think deeper about what strength truly means. Taking the competition s massive $200,000 Grand Prize, Italian photographer Gianluca Gianferrari delivered a jaw-dropping image captured on Mount Etna in Sicily. His photograph freezes a surreal moment where fiery lava erupts violently into the night sky while glowing embers scatter across a landscape blanketed in snow. The striking clash between molten fire, icy terrain, and starlit darkness creates a scene that feels almost unreal like nature flexing its raw, unstoppable strength.

The 18 photographs featured in this collection represent more than just technical brilliance. They tell stories about our planet, our struggles, and our triumphs. From dramatic landscapes to intimate human moments, these images remind us that photography has the rare ability to freeze time while igniting emotion.

Their stream-lined bodies and strong ‘flippers’ also allow them to dive more than 200 metres to feed on swarms of krill. Penguins will dive more than 400 times a day in order to continuously feed on the abundant food sources and ensure sustenance for themselves and their newborn chicks back at their colonies.
