A cinematic obsessive with the filmic palate of a starving raccoon, Rob London will watch pretty much anything once. With a mind like a steel trap, he's an endless fount of movie and TV trivia, borne from a misspent youth of watching monster movies on TV, perusing the sun-faded goods at the local video rental shop, and staining his fingers with ink from the Video Movie Guide. Areas of interest include science fiction, film noir, horror flicks, '70s disaster pictures, Bond movies, '90s action, giant robots, dinosaurs, super heroes, and the exuberantly schlocky output of Cannon Films. He also enjoys both Star Trek and Star Wars when they're good, and maybe even more when they're bad. As a Canadian, he also has a vested interest in Canadian movies and TV shows, especially the cheesier ones dubbed "Canuxploitation."

An expert on Marvel Comics, he has also written for the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe, and is a member of the Marvel Research Team. He can frequently be found pontificating on comic-book continuity or bemoaning the misfortunes of the Toronto Maple Leafs on his Twitter account.

Last year, with much fanfare, Amazon announced that a revival of the Stargate franchise was in the works. Last month, with considerably less fanfare, Amazon then cancelled that revival in development. The proposed new series was from Stargate veteran Martin Gero, and promised to write the next chapter of the Stargate saga; it was axed in pre-production, reportedly because it was too focused on the series' existing fanbase, and didn't offer enough to new viewers. That existing fanbase, however, is fighting back.

The #SaveStargate movement has planned a rally in Times Square tomorrow. The movement previously held a rally in studio home Cilver City on June 16, and has also erected billboards and hired planes towing banners; they've also garnered support from past Stargate stars like Michael Shanks, Rachel Luttrell, and Robert Patrick. Says organizer James Kerfoot, who has raised funds for the effort on GoFundMe, "There is a global fanbase that is still going strong nearly thirty years after Stargate SG-1 first premiered. We knew we couldn’t limit our efforts to California, so this week we rally in NYC to have our voices heard." For those who can't attend tomorrow's rally, it will be livestreamed online; there is also a petition at Change.org that has already accrued 100,000 signatures. Says Kerfoot, "We hope Amazon MGM hears us and realizes that current fans are the best free advertising they could ever ask for. Times Square is just the next stop, not the last one. We’re not going away anytime soon." More information on the campaign can be found at SaveStargate.com.

What Is 'Stargate' About?

Written and directed by Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, 1994's Stargate tells the tale of the US military's attempt to reactivate an ancient machine of alien origin found in the Egyptian desert. The machine turns out to be a stargate; a team, led by hardened veteran Jack O'Neill (Kurt Russell) and researcher Dr. Daniel Jackson (James Spader) are sent through it, and discover a distant planet of human slaves ruled over by a powerful alien. The film was a success, and led to a spin-off TV series, Stargate SG-1; starring Richard Dean Anderson as O'Neill and Shanks as Jackson, it ran for ten seasons and built a devoted fanbase. It eventually spun off two more series, Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe, and a number of TV movies; it has largely lain dormant since Universe ended in 2011, but Amazon announced their intention to revive it when they acquired MGM and its library of properties. Despite the cancellation of Gero's revival, the conglomerate is still interested in a new Stargate series.

Numerous science fiction series have had their fanbases rally to save their series from cancellation. Most famously, an enormous write-in campaign convinced NBC to renew Star Trek for a third season back in 1967; that devoted following then helped make the franchise an enduring part of the pop culture landscape.
