Silo season 2 maintained an air of ambiguity surrounding Juliette and Bernard's fate, but the Apple TV show's season 3 finally gives some answers. In Silo season 2's gripping finale, Juliette returned home to Silo 18 in a firefighter suit. To her surprise, she found Bernard leaving Silo 18 just as she was about to enter.
Before the episode's credits started rolling, Juliette assured Bernard she had found a way to save Silo 18's people from the Safeguard Procedure. Unfortunately, before she could save the day, she and Bernard found themselves trapped in Silo 18's decontamination chamber where flames erupted all around them. As Silo season 3 confirms, Juliette managed to survive her brush with doom.
Since Juliette is the main character of the series, her survival is not surprising. What is surprising, though, is that the show rewrites a major aspect of her storyline to show how the incident from Silo season 2's ending has affected her. Bernard's fate has also been confirmed, but there is seemingly more to it than meets the eye.
Juliette Survived The Fire But Has Amnesia In Silo Season 3
In Silo season 3's opening episode, Juliette seems nothing like her old self. She struggles to remember old friends from the Mechanical and barely seems to grieve her father's demise. Sims' wife, Camille, trails her around Silo 18 and helps her react to her surroundings as the new mayor. Even when Juliette looks at herself in the mirror, she finds it hard to understand who she really used to be before losing her memory.
Most Silo 18's citizens seem to assume that the trauma from Silo season 2's ending event has given Juliette amnesia. However, there are a few that seemingly know the truth about what is being done to her to keep her silent and compliant.
Juliette, too, keeps getting brief flashes of her past. She even recalls how she was deadset on doing something urgent when she returned home, likely referring to sealing the pipe that triggers the Safeguard Procedure. Before Silo season 3's episode 1 ends its run, it becomes evident that Juliette's memory loss has little to do with the incident from season 2's ending.
Bernard Was Murdered After Barely Surviving The Fire In Silo Season 2's Ending
When Juliette tries to know more about Bernard's fate, Robert Sims lies to her and tells her that the "poison" in the decontamination chamber killed him. However, a flashback reveals that Bernard, too, had made it out alive with many severe burns. Bernard likely survived after Juliette protected him from the fire in the chamber using her firefighter suit as a shield.
Despite surviving, though, Bernard was seemingly murdered by Robert Sims, who asphyxiated and burned his body in Silo 18's incineration chamber. Considering how the flashback suggests Robert killed Bernard, it is possible that the Tim Robbins character is actually dead. Even in the original Silo books, Bernard dies towards the end of the first book before Juliette becomes the new mayor.
However, after season 3's episode 1, it is hard not to be a little suspicious about the plot surrounding Bernard's death.
There's Seemingly More To Juliette & Bernard's Story In Silo Season 3
Towards the end of Silo season 1's episode 3, Camille meets the "Algorithm," which was introduced in Silo season 2. The Algorithm questions her about Juliette's returning memories and asks her to double Juliette's dose of the "memory loss" drugs. This confirms that the vitamin pills are actually being used to suppress Juliette's memory.
The Algorithm clearly understands how big of a threat Juliette and her rebellious beliefs can be. It also probably figured out that Juliette might have found a lot of answers surrounding the Safeguard Procedure during her time outside. Owing to this, her memory is being suppressed to keep her quiet and compliant. Others, like Lukas Kyle, have also been silenced to ensure no one else learns about the Safeguard.
A closer look at Robert Sims' story in Silo season 2 reveals that he, too, was experiencing a major shift in his morality. After loyally supporting Bernard's decisions and showing no defiance towards the "Order," Sims was starting to question higher authorities.
This makes it hard not to wonder if he is only pretending to be on his wife's side in Silo season 3. He might have faked Bernard's death and kept him hidden somewhere to be able to later help Juliette retain her memories.
