Cancelled Fallout Game Leaves Gamers Questioning Bethesda

The Fallout franchise is just about as popular as it has ever been right now, with the Prime Video adaptation bringing the post-apocalypse to a whole new audience and increasing demands for more playing experiences in the world Bethesda is now the steward of.
Now, it seems that another game was in the works that was set to serve as a spin-off of sorts, but the realities of modern game production have seemingly come home to roost once again.
A Fallout Game Was Reportedly Cancelled, And Fans Aren't Happy
If you missed the news, The Jeff Gerstmann Show confirmed that an unannounced Fallout project that had previously been in development at another studio within Microsoft’s gaming division has apparently now been canceled (via TwistedVoxel). At the same time, he also alleged that both of the remake projects have been outsourced to other developers.
Given just how profitable Fallout could be for both Microsoft and Bethesda, it seems utterly bizarre that they aren't able to efficiently take advantage of its popularity with new releases, and the game's community is questioning exactly what's going on.
Over on Reddit, one user shared the news, and the community was quick to share their disbelief at the current situation.
"Know what else should be outsourced? Elder Scrolls. It’s been FIFTEEN F***ING YEARS and ES6 isn’t even close to completion. That’s absolutely irresponsible to the franchise. They need to let someone else make an ES game if they’re going to take damn near 20 years between entries," one comment read.
"Naturally, they'd never be a thing if we had to wait for Bethesda to do them," another added.
"If a spin-off was true. Why the hell would they cancel it? A spin-off at this point would sell insane units. Wtf," a third observed.
Fallout 5 Is Still So Far Away

The fact is that if one of the biggest companies in the world, in Microsoft, is unable to get Fallout games into players' hands, even when outsourced, then it really does show just how much of a sorry state the AAA game development industry is in.
With that in mind, we know that the next game in the mainline single-player series is almost certainly years away, and we might not even get to play Fallout 5 before the 2020s draws to a close.
