Netflix has a new crime series that is perfect to watch before the arrival of Heat 2. While it's not a carbon copy of Michael Mann’s iconic 1995 film, the Netflix series mirrors it in several ways. Yet, rather than echoing themes we’ve already seen in one of the best heist movies of all time, the series reimagines a classic tale for a modern audience.
As the countdown to Heat 2 continues, Netflix’s Nemesis steps into the spotlight not as a replacement but as a show that could scratch the itch before the long-awaited arrival of Mann’s sequel film. Nemesis perfectly captures what made Heat have enduring appeal: much like the movie, the Netflix action series pits two men on opposite sides of the law against each other.
Nemesis is more than just a cat-and-mouse game, however. It's psychological warfare, obsession, and the kind of tension that is hard to look away from. What the heist series does incredibly well is understand right from its first episode that the dynamic between the criminal mastermind and the law enforcement officer is its backbone. Every decision, job, and relationship raises the stakes in the crime drama.
Netflix's Nemesis Beats Michael Mann's Heat 2 To The Punch
At the end of Heat, Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) and Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino) finally confront each other, with the former dying after their showdown. With such a conclusion to their magnetic relationship, it didn’t seem like there would be a need to continue the story. After all, the dynamic between McCauley and Hanna was what held the movie together.
Surprisingly, in 2022, Mann teamed up with Meg Gardiner to write a novel, Heat 2, about the characters in the 1995 film. The book serves as both a prequel, since it focuses on Hanna and Vincent’s pasts before they knew each other, and a sequel, as it delves into the events following McCauley's death.
Talks about Heat 2 began in 2023, a year after the novel it will be based on was published. However, news about when the film would actually be released has been scarce. Mann, who is set to direct, recently confirmed that the screenplay and first draft of the script have been handed in.
Given how slow-moving Heat 2 has been, it’s no surprise that Nemesis was released first. The Netflix series has benefited from the speedy production process of streaming. TV shows that debut on streaming platforms can be greenlit, produced, and released in a much shorter timeline than legacy sequels or prequels, especially ones like Heat. So, while Heat 2 is still evolving through development stages, a show like Nemesis can reach audiences immediately.
Nemesis Is More Than Just A Heat Clone (Despite Being Very Similar)
NetflixNemesis and Heat are too alike for anyone to deny their similarities. The series almost perfectly mirrors Mann’s beloved movie, not just in terms of its characters but in how the story plays out. In Nemesis, for instance, Coltrane Wilder (Y'lan Noel) and his crew are jeopardized when one of their members messes up their mission, which also happens in Heat. The primary protagonists, Hanna in Heat and Isaiah Stiles (Matthew Law) in Nemesis, both have marriages that are crumbling down due to their overcommitment to work.

However, the movie and TV show do diverge in some respects. Nemesis is a series, so it has more time to delve into the lives of not only the main cast but also the supporting characters. Compared to Mann’s film, Nemesis is filled with more guns, violence and brutality.
Heat is also most famous for its star-studded cast, which Nemesis lacks. If the Netflix series were a true clone of Heat, then it would have followed suit when it came to its ensemble. However, given its high-quality, Nemesis may turn its cast into A-list stars sooner rather than later.
