Brandon Sanderson just revealed he reached a major milestone in the writing process for his Mistborn film script.
Earlier this year, Apple TV announced it was adapting Sanderson's Mistborn book series as movies, with The Stormlight Archive also in development as a TV series. The author himself has a lot of creative control over the adaptations, including as writer and producer. Sanderson has been letting his fans know how the writing process has been going over the past several months.
Now he has shared the biggest update yet. In a post on X, Sanderson announced that "the first draft of the Mistborn screenplay is DONE!" The bestselling author added that this is just an "early step" in what will be a "very long process" to bring the story to life on-screen, but he's "terribly excited by how it turned out!"
"After many months of work, I'm thrilled to announce the first draft of the Mistborn screenplay is DONE! Just in time to celebrate the book's original publication, twenty years ago this month. Do please remember that this is just an early step in a very long process, but I'm terribly excited by how it turned out!"
He also attached a photo of the script with the cover page on top that reads, "Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson. Draft 1.11." Check out the image below:
Image via Brandon SandersonSanderson's best-known books are the Mistborn series, which consists of the original Era One trilogy The Final Empire, The Well of Ascension and The Hero of Ages; the novella Secret History; and the Era Two books The Alloy of Law, Shadows of Self, The Bands of Mourning and The Lost Metal. Era Three is currently in the works.
Mistborn is part of Sanderson's larger Cosmere Universe, which includes The Stormlight Archive, Hoid’s Travails, Elantris, Warbreaker and The Sunlit Man. Outside of Cosmere, he's also written multiple other series like Alcatraz, Cytoverse, Legion and The Reckoners, and finished Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series.
Just a couple of weeks ago, Sanderson revealed that he was close to finishing the script for the first Mistborn film and was still on track to turn it in to Apple at the end of July and then begin revisions. He admitted that he was concerned about the pacing being too fast, so he was considering adding one or two extra scenes focusing on the main characters.
The author, whose books have sold more than 50 million copies throughout his career, also teased that a producer has been hired for Mistborn, but the person was still undergoing contract negotiations, so an official announcement can't happen just yet. A search for a director hasn't even begun yet, and it likely won't until Sanderson spends a good amount of time on script revisions.
This major update comes amid the 20th anniversary of the very first Mistborn novel, Mistborn: The Final Empire, which was released on July 17, 2006. The story revolves around a group of rebels that works together to defeat a tyrant with the help of Allomancy.
As it's still very early in the development process, a premiere date for Mistborn has not been announced yet.
