There was a time when Sony needed Disney's Marvel Cinematic Universe to make Spider-Man relevant again, but the tables have turned. Struggling desperately after a poor Phase Four, the MCU is turning to the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day to get back on track and generate buzz ahead of Avengers: Doomsday this December. The once-infallible film franchise has certainly lost some of its sheen, with Dune: Part Three not only refusing to chicken out of a December clash with Doomsday, but monopolizing all the IMAX screens. For Doomsday to work, the MCU needs Brand New Day to match, if not exceed, the cultural impact of 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home. The good news is that audiences are still hugely invested in the character, as can be seen from the impact that the record-breaking Brand New Day trailer had on the three most recent Spider-Man films on streaming.

The Brand New Day trailer amassed 718 million views across platforms in the first 24 hours of release, effectively doubling the previous record of 365 million views, set by Deadpool & Wolverine a couple of years ago. The massive interest in the new Spider-Man film, which is the fourth to star Tom Holland in the lead role, has resulted in a viewership spike for all three of its predecessors. Holland debuted as the character a decade ago, in Captain America: Civil War. He returned as Spider-Man in both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. He's now the only actor ever to star in more than three solo Spider-Man movies; each successive film has outgrossed the previous one.

Sometimes actors quit; other times they're fired. On this first day of spring, we're recalling some famous roles that got a fresh start with a recast.

Here's How the 'Brand New Day' Trailer Impacted the Spider-Man Franchise on Streaming

Holland's solo journey as Spider-Man began in 2017, with Spider-Man: Homecoming. The movie was markedly different from the previous iterations; not only was it set in the MCU, but it also felt like a real teen comedy. Directed by Jon Watts, the film featured Robert Downey Jr. in an extended cameo that reportedly cost Sony $10 million, which was reflected in the film's overall $175 million production budget. It grossed more than $880 million worldwide and earned positive reviews. Also featuring Zendaya and Michael Keaton, Homecoming holds a "Certified Fresh" 92% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. According to FlixPatrol, it was among the most-watched movies on the domestic Disney+ chart this week. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
