While both films were hits, Bob Odenkirk is still waiting for an answer for Nobody 3.

Now, in an interview with ScreenRant's Ash Crossan on the red carpet for the Saturn Awards, Odenkirk was asked about the future of the Nobody franchise. Re-affirming that "I do have ideas" for two more sequels in the series, the two-time Emmy winner confessed that "I don't know that I'll get to do it," waiting for an answer from Universal Pictures. He did, however, say that he'll "do what they want" to make another installment and even teased his ideas for the next film:

Bob Odenkirk: But people liked Nobody 2 a lot, it made a lot of people happy. I tried to present a more — well, Timo Tjahjanto made it very bloody. [Chuckles] But I wanted to lean in the direction of Jackie Chan, so we had the duck boat fight...but it could go really dark, is one thought I have. Like, the darkest, violent film you’ve ever seen or thought. But then they might say, “Don’t do that to your audience, there’s so many people who are enjoying Nobody in a wider context.”

Also featuring the returns of Connie Nielsen, Christopher Lloyd and RZA, Nobody 2 didn't quite match up to the sleeper hit status of its predecessor. It still scored largely positive reviews from critics, scoring a 76% "Certified Fresh" approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which wasn't a far cry from the original's 83% score.

However, the action sequel didn't fare quite as well at the box office, having only earned just over $43 million against its $27 million production budget. While not a big step-down from the first Nobody's $57.5 million box office haul, the larger budget combined with most movies needing to make 2.5 times their budget from marketing and theater cuts does put it both below the break-even point, and the original's profit margin.

That being said, with the movie still technically making back its production budget, and putting the John Wick-like franchise beyond the $100 million mark, there's still very much a chance Nobody 3 could still move ahead. Universal seems keen on staying in business with 87North Productions, having worked with them for four years straight, beginning with Violent Night, whose sequel is finally releasing in December. They also have five other projects in various stages of development, including the long-gestating Gears of War adaptation.

Additionally, Nobody 2's ending leaves the door open just enough for a potential third installment in the franchise. The most notable hanging thread is the debt that Hutch owes to Colin Salmon's the Barber after taking care of the money he burned from the Russian obshchak. The Barber may have briefly cut ties with Hutch in his fight against Sharon Stone's Lendina, but that debt is still a substantial enough one that he may want Hutch getting back to work.

Another way for Nobody 3 to build on the latest movie's story is exploring more of Hutch and Becca's backstory. The 2025 sequel saw them explain that they met while Hutch was covered in blood after a mission, while also showing Nielsen's character having some of her own skills with weapons. Not only can a third movie expound on this, but also see her changing professions to join Hutch on missions.

How Nobody 2's Ending Separates It Forever From The John Wick Franchise Explained By Director

EXCLUSIVE: Director Timo Tjahjanto reveals the deeper meaning behind Nobody 2's ending and how it sets the franchise apart from things like John Wick.

Though nothing may be confirmed as of yet, Odenkirk's idea to take Nobody 3 in a dark direction does prove a change of opinion from his previous comments on two more sequels, in which he enjoyed the family dynamic and wanted to keep it going. With the 2025 sequel seeing Hutch having trouble distancing himself from the job and letting his anger pour over into his home life, a third film could reasonably see that turning into something much darker for the Mansell family.
