Blake Lively had a bittersweet 2024; she starred in the biggest hit of her career, but it came at a huge cost. The movie in question, It Ends with Us, grossed more than $350 million worldwide. However, its production was wrought with conflict between Lively and her co-star and director Justin Baldoni. The two are currently locked in a legal battle that has drawn huge media attention and effectively ended the chances of It Ends with Us ever getting a sequel. Lively hadn't had such a huge hit in years; It Ends with Us was her highest-grossing movie since A Simple Favor, which grossed nearly $100 million worldwide. Before that, Lively starred in a survival thriller that remains popular on home video, and is currently available to stream on Netflix. However, it won't be available for too long as the platform is set to remove the movie at the end of the month.

This gives you two weeks to check it out. The movie was directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, who made a name for himself with a string of hit genre films headlined by Liam Neeson. Collet-Serra went on to join the Dwayne Johnson camp around five years ago, directing two mega-budget flops for the star — Jungle Cruise and Black Adam. Sensing that he was out of his depth on projects that cost upwards of $250 million, Collet-Serra returned to his mid-budget B-movie roots and released Carry-On, which emerged as one of the most-watched Netflix movies of all time. Carry-On brought him back to the sort of bread-and-butter movies that he was so adept at making, movies like this Lively thriller.

Blake Lively's Hit Survival Thriller Rivals 'Jaws'

We're talking about The Shallows, of course. The movie is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. It follows Lively's character, a young woman who becomes stranded on a rock in shark-infested waters. She uses every ounce of her resourcefulness to get out of the sticky situation. Essentially a one-woman show, the movie grossed around $120 million worldwide against a reported budget of $17 million. The Shallows also earned positive reviews, and is now sitting at a "Certified Fresh" 79% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The aggregator website's consensus reads, "Lean and solidly crafted, The Shallows transcends tired shark-attack tropes with nasty thrills and a powerful performance from Blake Lively." You can watch the movie on Netflix until March 29. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
