Arthur Morgan's tuberculosis diagnosis in Red Dead Redemption 2 is a crushing turning point in the long game's emotional narrative. There's no way to save the gruff, beloved protagonist, since his declining health is a major story arc, but for those who aren't satisfied with the switch to John Marston's point of view in the epilogue, there's a new mod perfect for bringing Arthur back.

Arthur Free Roam Unlocker has been released via Nexus Mods by creator somncoitus. The mod cures Arthur of his TB, leaving him a bit worse for wear, but also makes some important changes to RDR2's open world. The Blackwater lockdown is lifted, and the so-called "New Austin sniper" (a guaranteed death by off-screen gunshots if you go too far west) has been disabled, letting Arthur roam the entirety of Red Dead Redemption 2's map.

Arthur Morgan Lives In New RDR2 Mod

Rockstar Games' Red Dead Redemption 2 is a masterpiece and one of the best games ever developed in no small part because of Arthur's tragic tale. He's an endearing figure actively working to improve himself, reassessing his motives and lifestyle, and tragically contracts tuberculosis early on. Arthur's decline is gradual and hard to watch at times, and his death in RDR2's finale leads to the game's contentious character switch to John, the original Red Dead Redemption protagonist.

Despite John being beloved in his own right, it's difficult for many players to leave the character they've spent dozens of hours with, especially for RDR2's version of John, who up until the epilogue has been rash and often immature. But so long after the game came out, its most dedicated fans are just enjoying the meticulously made game world, so why not resurrect Arthur for some unrestricted free roam?

We've Waited A Long Time For This

I remember when Red Dead Redemption 2 first came out and the player base collectively started experiencing the latter stages of the game. Arthur's diagnosis was a common topic, and many wondered if they'd made a wrong decision somewhere, somehow getting themselves locked into a bad ending to the game. The reality is there's no official way to save Arthur, but mods like this give players an opportunity to explore a different outcome, where Arthur doesn't succumb to TB.

Rockstar Games locking New Austin – the entire state is considered cut content – was another common point of discussion. Killing the player for entering New Austin with no recourse is a clunky way to keep them in the intended zone, and many wondered for a long time if there was some way to lift the lockdown. There isn't really any bespoke content for the area, and Armadillo is a ghost town because of a Scarlet Fever outbreak, but it's interesting to explore nonetheless.

This fully recreated New Austin has long fueled hopes of a Red Dead Redemption remake, but nothing of the sort has materialized. Various mods are the best we can get at the moment, and Arthur Free Roam Unlocker is a great way to cure Arthur and explore New Austin, even if there's not much to do out there. There was no cure for tuberculosis in 1899, but a mod can bring back Red Dead Redemption 2's beloved lead.
