Black Myth: Wukong is a fan-favorite game that did an incredible job of adapting the age-old story of Journey to the West, one of China's "Four Great Classical Novels." The 16th Century tale was written during the Ming dynasty, sometime between 1368–1644, and is traditionally attributed to Wu Cheng'en, with the video game being widely hailed for how it reinterpreted Sun Wukong's story into an original experience.

With the proliferation of new Chinese-myth-based video games releasing lately, fans are understandably starting to have a hard time keeping track of which games belong to which IP. In the past year alone, several projects have either released or been announced that delve into various aspects of Chinese mythology, from Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, Phantom Blade Zero, Genigods: Nezha, Swords of Legends... the list goes on.

While each of these games offers a unique take on specific aspects of Chinese mythology, one game in particular is easily being confused with another Black Myth sequel due to its historical connection to the Ming Dynasty era. A Whisper of Fall: Jinyiwei is an upcoming new Wuxia-style game from CangMo Game Entertainment that tells the story of an ordinary boatman that has to infiltrate the Imperial Guards of the Ming Dynasty, aka the Jinywei (via Steam).

Because of Black Myth's connection to the Ming Dynasty via Journey to the West, some gamers on Reddit have accidentally mistaken A Whisper of Fall: Jinyiwei as another official sequel in the Black Myth franchise, though in reality there is no connection between the two titles beyond that. "Huh another Black Myth game?" asks cooldudeachyut in response to a misleading YouTube image calling A Whisper of Fall: Jinyiwei a "new Black Myth" game.

The misunderstanding was clarified in later comments, but it doesn't help that Whisper of Fall is constantly being compared to Black Myth beyond the Ming Dynasty connection itself, with fans highlighting gameplay similarities across YouTube and other forums online.

Of course, while there's no reason these comparisons can't be made, it's important to distinguish that Whisper of Fall: Jinywei is NOT an official new Black Myth game, and the only confirmed sequel in the franchise is Black Myth: Zhong Kui, which was first announced at the 2025 Game Awards and isn't expected to release for at least a few more years. That said, there are plenty of reasons to be excited about both titles, despite them not being part of the same series.
