Big Bang Theory star makes surprise cameo in spinoff Stuart Fails to Save the Universe… and you'd never recognize him

A beloved character from Big Bang Theory made an unexpected appearance on the new HBO Max spinoff Stuart Fails To Save the Universe, and he looked virtually unrecognizable.

In the premiere episode, Spoiler: Gary Dies, viewers were stunned to see Kunal Nayyar reprise his role as Rajesh Koothrappali, but what was so startling was the way he looked.

Nayyar, 45, sported rugged long hair and a bushy, unkempt beard while playing an alternate-universe version of Raj, and a bit of a paranoid personality to boot, per People.

The Big Bang Theory – whose lead star Jim Parsons admitted he was 'miserable' filming the show – was an enormous global hit that ran for 12 seasons and 279 episodes from 2007 to 2019. It followed two smart, socially awkward physicists, Sheldon Cooper (Parsons) and Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki), and their outgoing neighbor, Penny (Kaley Cuoco).

Their core friends group included Raj, Howard Wolowitz (Simon Helberg), Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik) and Bernadette Rostenkowski-Wolowitz (Melissa Rauch).

Nayyar appeared in all 12 seasons and was a popular main character on the show. Viewers found Raj sweet, sensitive and quirky, and around women he was so awkward he had to be drunk to talk to them.

Stuart Fails to Save the Universe is the eagerly-awaited new sci-fi comedy that premiered on HBO Max on Thursday about comic book store owner Stuart Bloom (Kevin Sussman), who accidentally triggers a multiverse apocalypse.

To fix reality, Stuart must bounce through bizarre alternate dimensions with a motley crew that includes his girlfriend Denise (Lauren Lapkus) and geologist Bert Kibbler (Brian Posehn).

Their journey takes them to a post-apocalyptic Caltech run by an alternate version of quantum physicist Barry Kripke (John Ross Bowie). After being locked up in the geology lab, they are met by an alternate version of Raj (Nayyar).

After years of captivity, Raj appears vastly different with his tangled hair and beard, but still retains the same charm, wit and distinct sarcasm that fans will remember from The Big Bang Theory despite the otherworldly paranoia.

The gang sees their chance to escape thanks to Bert's geological smarts and grabs it before continuing on their multiverse quest.

The series promises to feature other surprise appearances, Easter eggs and a multitude of twists involving alternate-universe versions of other characters from The Big Bang Theory.

Speaking to People, Lapkus said fans will be surprised to see how different Stuart Fails to Save the Universe is from the original show.

'It’s a completely different vibe and type of show, but I do think that the humor that they appreciated in the first series will translate here and they’ll be able to enjoy it,' she shared.

'And there’s also lots of Easter eggs and cameos and guest stars and things that they’ll be very excited about.'

Lapkus added Nayyar's cameo is one of her favorite moments.

'I’m just thinking about Kunal's appearance. His first appearance is so funny and fun and so different from the show. I just think people will love that,' she added.

In 2025, when word came out that there was going to be another show in The Big Bang Theory franchise, Nayyar reacted enthusiastically.

'Could not have happened to a nicer and more talented group of people! I Love you,' he shared on Instagram, with a nod to new castmates Sussman, Lapkus, Posehn and Bowie.
